About a year after a local sheriff's deputy died, Santa Clarita officials have named a street to honor his memory.

Representatives from the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department, the city and Pardee Homes plan to unveil the new "Dep. Randy Hamson Court" sign Tuesday on a street crossing Via Princessa near Golden Oak Community School, said Los Angeles County sheriff's Sgt. Darren Harris.

"There's an elementary school and there's a planned senior citizen housing development there," Harris said. "That's where Randy will keep watch forever. He's a true community hero, and for us, it keeps his memory alive."

Officials plan to present the sign Tuesday at 3 p.m. to honor the deputy who died in October 2008 from injuries he received while investigating a traffic collision in 2004.

Hamson was investigating the crash along a poorly lit stretch of Sierra Highway on Aug. 16, 2004, when a car hit him, severely injuring his head.

He died after a four-year struggle to recover.

Hamson joined the sheriff's department in 1999 and worked at the Pitchess Detention Center until 2003 when he started patrol service at the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station, Harris said.

He is the third deputy in the station's history to die in the line of duty, Harris added.

Deputy Arthur Pelino was shot and killed by a mentally deranged suspect in 1978 and in 2001, Deputy Hagop "Jake" Kuredjian was shot and killed in Stevenson Ranch while assisting the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms during a warrant search.

"Randy will always be with us, as will Jake and Arthur," Harris said. "This is another way we can we pay our respect to the family and pay our respects to Randy (and) the sacrifice he made."

The event is open to the public and will be held near 25201 Via Princessa, east of Highway 14 and the Via Princessa exit. Refreshments will be provided.

For more information, contact Harris at (661) 799-5804 or the Sheriff's Headquarters Bureau at (323) 267-4800.
