Mountain area residents near Santa Clarita Valley welcomed their first snow of the season early Saturday morning while local residents awoke to cool breezes and cloudy skies.

"It's nice and Christmassy," said Tyler Christiansen, of Castaic, while out holiday shopping.

"The leaves are falling, it's chilly and I put a sweatshirt on this morning."

Parts of Santa Clarita Valley received less than a half-inch of rain Friday night and early Saturday, said National Weather Service meteorologist Jamie Meier.

Temperatures hovered around 60 degrees throughout the day, she said.

"Chances are (the rain) is over, but there's still a slight chance mainly before sunset," Meier said Saturday afternoon. "The threat of any rain or snow will diminish by sunset."

Residents in the higher realms of Frazier Park, about 35 miles north of Castaic, were enjoying their first snow of the season, although the sun's afternoon rays began to melt their fresh white blanket.

"It's a winter wonderland and it's absolutely beautiful," said Caren McDonald, of Pine Mountain Club in Frazier Park.

"My little neighbors are making an igloo and I let my dogs out early to go for a run when it was still snowing this morning."

McDonald said she woke up to about four or five inches of snow around her home. Reports of snow came from those above the 4,500 elevation level, Meier said.

By mid-afternoon, skies had cleared over most parts of the SCV.

"You guys are like the one clear spot in the county," Meier said, adding that Saturday night should bring more clouds.

The Weather Service forecast breezy conditions for today with highs in the 60s and north winds of 20 to 30 miles per hour.
