The Sheriff's Station on Saturday held two alleged carjackers in custody after they attempted to steal a vehicle from a "good Samaritan," said Lt. Mark Hershey.

The two suspects, 25-year-old Jose Moreno and 38-year-old Leon Hardin, were stranded on Pico Canyon Road in Stevenson Ranch with a flat tire about 9:30 p.m. Friday night when a Newhall resident, in his 20s, stopped to assist the men, Hershey said.

After Moreno, of Sylmar, and Hardin, of Woodland Hills, offered the man $100 for a spare tire, the do-gooder drove the men to his home near Valley Oak Circle in Newhall to find a replacement, Hershey said.

When the man could not find a proper spare tire, that's when the suspects turned on him, said Hershey of the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station.

Moreno "puts a knife to the Good Samaritan," Hersey said.

Moreno was allegedly attempting to carjack the victim's car and Hardin apparently tried to help Moreno, Hershey said.

As the victim fought to defend himself, family members heard the scuffle and ran out of the house to help, Hershey said.

"The family captured one guy (Moreno)," Hershey said. "The other guy (Hardin) ran when he saw reinforcements."

After a brief search, deputies found Hardin near The Old Road and Sagecrest Circle, Hershey said.

Deputies arrested Moreno, a parolee, after he was treated at a hospital for injuries, Hershey said.

Both men were booked on charges of carjacking. After further investigation, deputies discovered the vehicle Moreno and Hardin were driving to be stolen out of Chula Vista, Hershey said.

The victim and his family members sustained no major injuries, Hershey said.
