Keeping children healthy for the new year

Parents can help children to take extra precautions to stay well during the New Year. Extra hand-washing and plenty of rest can help stave off colds and coughs.

When a cold or cough does strike, children need special care. Major makers of cough and cold medicine for children less than 2 years old pulled the products from stores.

The government is thinking about banning these medicines for children less than 6 years old. Why?
1.) They don’t work.
2.) They make your child hyperactive.
3.) They have bad side effects.

What To Do
Motrin and Tylenol: Treat fevers and bodyaches and can make your child more comfortable. Ask your medical provider or pharmacist for the appropriate dose based on your child’s weight and age .

Saline nose drops: Can help thin and loosen mucus; 2-3 drops three times a day before meals and bedtime. Buy saline nasal spray or make your own; 8 oz. of water and ½ teaspoon of salt.

Hydrate: Fever makes your body lose water. Hydration thins mucus and moistens a dry cough. A sign of dehydration is if urination is less frequent or dark.

Humidify: Makes air moist and loosens phlegm. Use a humidifier or sit next to steamy shower for 10 minutes.
Elevate head: Helps drain the mucus. Raise your child’s head by putting a pillow under the mattress.
