Vasquez of Acton lost 40-25 to Pilibos (18-3) of Los Angeles in Los Angeles in the first round of the CIF-Southern Section Division VA playoffs on Thursday.
It was Vasquez’s first appearance in the postseason.
In five previous seasons, Vasquez (9-10) won just six games but had a remarkable turnaround in 2010.
“We said after the game the playoffs are just different,” said Vasquez head coach Tim Taufaasau. “(Senior) McKenna Garrick said the playoffs seem mean. In a way it is mean because it’s one and done.”
Garrick scored 10 points, had seven rebounds and seven steals.
Jessica Bennett added four points and eight rebounds, Rachelle Beaudoin had five points and Madison Garrick contributed nine steals.
Vasquez was taken out of the game in the second quarter when the Eagles outscored the Mustangs 16-2 to take a 26-9 lead going into halftime.
“The place was packed. The crowd got wild. We were literally overwhelmed by the situation,” Taufaasau said.
The coach said this season, despite his team being a heavy underdog, not having a home court and practicing on a tile floor at a junior high multipurpose room, was “magical.”
“They didn’t let our circumstances get in the way,” he said of his players. “They were an absolute pleasure to coach.”
He added that this was just the beginning for his program.
