Jim Van Cleave, right, and neighbor Boeing Jugo look at the damage done to Van Cleave's mailbox after a suspect left the stolen car rolling on Alaminos Drive, south of Ridgegrove Drive in Saugus on Monday afternoon. The suspect was caught by deputies while he was running a block away on Rosedell Drive.

Sheriff’s deputies arrested a 19-year-old man on charges of grand theft auto Monday after he tried to flee from the vehicle on foot.

A deputy began to follow the man on Railroad Avenue in Newhall after a license plate scanner identified the Nissan Sentra he was driving as a stolen vehicle, said Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff’s Deputy Dan Wyman.

The deputy continued to follow the Canyon Country man into a Saugus neighborhood. Once on Alaminos Drive, the man got out of his car and fled past the yards of nearby homes and an adjacent wash.

Deputies caught the man running on Rosedell Drive and arrested him for grand theft auto. He also had a couple of high-bail warrants, said Lt. Tom Bryski.

Alaminos Drive resident Jim Van Cleave had just returned home from work when he noticed the abandoned Sentra slowly rolling toward him. The Sentra knocked over and damaged his mailbox.

“All I saw was this car rolling gradually toward me with no driver in it,” he said. “I’m happy it hit the mailbox and not my work truck.”

Sheriff’s deputies are investigating whether the arrested man was also a suspect in an earlier burglary, Wyman said.
