The Valencia High School dance team kicked off its 2010 competition season by traveling to Claremont High School on Feb. 6.
The team is off to a strong season as the three-time national champion winning troupe scored an unprecedented seven first-place victories and one second place out of a possible eight.
“What a great start,” dance team adviser Eve Itaya said.
“I’m so proud of all our kids. They work so hard and it’s very gratifying to see them achieve such positive results.”
Beginning with an early morning commute through heavy rain, the group spent the day showcasing its talents at the 29th annual Festival of Champions, competing against schools from around the region.
Valencia took first place in Officers, Small Lyrical, Small Jazz, Medium, Character, Large Lyrical and Large, along with a second-place trophy for Intermediate.
After graduating eight seniors, this 2010 lineup had some big shoes to fill.
The squad has won national championship titles for three years in a row, and its members have developed a reputation as fierce competitors who pride themselves on excellence both on and off the floor.
The team is led by captains Alex Chernos, Sierra Gordon, Becca Herd, Chelsea Itaya, Chrissy Spengler and Chelsea Van Name. Other members include Rachel Chernos, Ashley Clifford, Danielle Dardis, Marlee Feinholz, Emily Gasper, Torey Itaya, Carly Janusek, Kayte Largman, Chase Lehner, Siri Loken, Tasia Moore, Emily Morgan, Tori Pinkston, Brooke Radding, Chelsea Raff, Sarah Ruffner, Nicole Timpone and Danica Wilkerson.
