A judge on Wednesday sentenced a Canyon Country man to 16 months in state prison following the man’s 13-year-long identity theft spree that tormented the victim and his family, a court spokeswoman said.

Luis Figueroa, 35, of Canyon Country appeared in Santa Clarita Superior Court on Tuesday and agreed to the terms of his case involving forgery and identity theft, a sheriff’s news release said.

A deputy from the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Commercial Crimes Bureau Identify Theft Unit unraveled Figueroa’s lengthy and complicated web of fraud. Figueroa had been openly selling the victim’s information, the news release said.

Throughout the 13 years, Figueroa’s criminal actions led to several false arrests of his Lancaster victim. The victim was released after each arrest when his fingerprints did not match up.

The victim had no criminal record or previous contact with law enforcement, yet days after one Thanksgiving, his children watched as deputies arrested him.

The victim had recently returned from military duty in Iraq.

In the 13 years, the victim faced hardships such as a suspended driver’s license and trouble receiving high-security clearance for a job he was seeking, the sheriff’s information said.

Although Figueroa is behind bars, the victim must continue to carry several forms of identifications and court documentation proclaiming his innocence and true identity.
