School will be back in session at Hart High School today following a major power outage that struck the Newhall school Sunday morning.

Rain from the weekend storm shorted out an electrical panel at the school, said Pat Willett, spokeswoman for the William S. Hart Union High School District.

Maintenance crews from the William S. Hart Union High School District and Southern California Edison were able to restore power to nearly half of the classrooms by late Sunday. District leaders decided to close school Monday because none of the fire alarm systems were operable, Willett said.

Hart families and student were notified of the closure Sunday.

Crews returned to the school Monday and were able to restore power everywhere but the small gym and parking lot, she said. Crews also weather-proofed the panels, she said.

Since the power outage was an unforeseen circumstance beyond the district’s control, the Hart district plans to petition the state for a waiver so the district does not lose any funding.
