The Canyon boys tennis team used dominant performances by its top singles players and doubles teams to defeat Lancaster 14-4 Tuesday afternoon at Canyon High School.

Cowboys head coach Kent Ganevsky gave top singles player Jason Ferlianto the day off due to his workload off the court.

Senior Matt Kincaid stepped in and swept his three sets in impressive fashion, losing just two games – both to Austin Frazier, the No. 2 player for the Eagles (0-3).

“Matt played well,” Ganevsky said. “He got good shots. He has good technique. When his game is on he can play with anyone.”

Senior Kevin Snovicky, Canyon’s No. 2 singles player, swept his three sets 6-0, 6-1, 6-2, and Ganevsky gave both Colby Greening and Harch Wadwa the chance to play in the third singles spot.

Although neither player was able to beat Lancaster No. 3 Roberto Cuyate, Ganevsky said the experience is what counts for his players who don’t normally see a lot of varsity action.

“Once the season starts, we can’t rotate them in like we do now,” he said.

Canyon’s No. 1 doubles team of Harry Lee and Cory Yasmaoka dropped just three games total in sweeping the three sets 6-0, 6-1, 6-2, while the No. 2 doubles team of Kevin Nguyen and Alex DeGuzman swept its three sets 6-2, 6-1, 6-1.

Lancaster head coach Tom Mayton said that he schedules Canyon regularly to help his team get ready for the Golden League.

“We like to play these guys in the preseason because they’re in a different league, both literally and physically,” Mayton said. “We want our kids to not worry about winning or losing, just to go out and learn.”

Canyon’s No. 3 doubles team of Jesse Kim and Christoph Seeliger won two of its three matches, including an exciting 7-6 victory in the final match of the day that saw the duo rally from a 5-1 deficit.

Still, Kim feels like he’s still working out the kinks.

“I felt like I could have done better,” he said. “That’s what pre-league is for.”

Canyon (3-1) will next travel to Lancaster Park to face Highland at 3:15 p.m. Friday.
