Jessica Frank of the City Planning Department demonstrates the Geographical Information System, which displays aerial views of Santa Clarita to assist in the permit process. The system was on display during an open house reception of the new city of Santa Clarita Permit Center at City Hall on Tuesday.

City officials hope their new, one-stop shop that opened Tuesday will help residents cut through the bureaucracy with ease.

The new permit center consolidates a range of city services in one office on the first floor of City Hall.

City officials unveiled the expanded and renovated permit office Tuesday in an open house ceremony.

"The advantage is that all city resources needed for a permit will meet you at one place," said city spokeswoman Gail Ortiz in an e-mail. "Before, residents and businesses would have to visit different counters at City Hall to get information."

Residents interested in getting a building permit can also send building plans to the city online through Santa Clarita's ePermit service, Ortiz said.

Filming and special event permits are handled in different offices across from the building center, she said.

The new permit center is part of Santa Clarita's 21-Point Business Plan that, for the last year, has tried to boost local business and spur the SCV's economy through a variety of programs.

In recent weeks the City Council has approved forming an Industrial Development Authority, which could make available millions of dollars worth of bonds available to city businesses. In November, Santa Clarita officials set aside $200,000 to help fund the Economic Development Corp., a non-profit organization that hopes to attract and promote local businesses in Santa Clarita with the help of leaders from College of the Canyons and Santa Clarita Valley Chamber of Commerce.
