The Santa Clarita Century bicycling event returns next month with a fourth, shorter event for newcomers to the sport.

The second annual cycling event will take place April 3, with proceeds going to two local charities.

The event's focal point is the 100-mile ride, called a "century." This event starts at 7 a.m. There's also a half-century, at 50 miles, that starts at 8 a.m. The routes for these two events travel up Soledad Canyon Road to Acton and back down Sierra Highway.

New this year is the 25-mile ride, which starts at 8:30 a.m. This shorter ride will reach Canyon Country and loop back.

All events start at Valencia Town Center.

The longer rides cost $50 while the 25-mile version costs $30.

The six-mile family ride starts at 10:30 a.m. and costs $10 per adult, with children riding free.

Proceeds will be donated to the Santa Clarita Child and Family Center, a mental health and behavioral service for families, and the Center of Rehabilitative Exercise, an organization that focuses on improving Santa Clarita Valley residents' quality of life.

Last year's event brought more than 300 bicyclists and raised $14,000. More than $9,000 went to the Santa Clarita Child and Family Center.
