Last weekend, Canyon was able to set one meet record at the 2010 Santa Clarita Valley Track and Field Invitational before the event was postponed due to rain.

When it continued on Saturday, the Cowboys set another one.

Led by the boys 4x800-meter relay team, Canyon's track and field team had a solid day at Canyon High School, as did Golden Valley.

The 4x800 team ran the race in 8 minutes, 20.55 seconds, which broke Taft's meet record by more than 11 seconds.

The record came a week after the Cowboys won the 4x1600 with a time of 18:48, breaking Crescenta Valley's previous mark.

On Saturday, the Canyon girls also won the 4x800 with a time of 10:45.17.

"Relays are more fun to run than individual races," said Canyon head coach Paul Broneer. "You don't want to let your teammates down. You have a little more motivation to go all out."

Neither the Cowboys nor the Grizzlies went all out with their participants, holding some kids out of certain events to get younger athletes more experience.

Canyon also won the girls distance medley with a time of 14:05.68, and Cowboy Josh Roper won the triple jump by leaping 39-9.

Canyon's Gillian Lopez won the pole vault by clearing 10 feet flat, which tied her own meet record.

The Cowboys finished second in the boys 4x200 relay at 1:32.62, and they also finished second in the boys distance medley at 11:10.10.

Brittany Cervero was second in the triple jump with a leap of 32-10, and Stevie Kennedy-Gold was second in the pole vault by clearing 9-6.

Kevin Enge was second in the high jump after clearing 6-0.

For Golden Valley, the girls 1600 sprint medley team won with a time of 4:41.09, and the girls 4x200 relay team finished second at 1:51.78.

Kristine Tan won the triple jump with a leap of 32-11 and the long jump by sailing 15-9. She also finished second in the high jump after clearing 4-11.

Joe Darko finished second in the 110 hurdles at 15.32 seconds, just .04 seconds behind Notre Dame's Slater Wayne. Golden Valley's Madeline Hardesty finished second in the girls 100 hurdles at 17.81.

Grizzlies co-head coach Chris Evans said that Saturday's meet was a good way to get repetitions for the field events and experience for his athletes.

"We wanted to get some experience for our younger kids," he said. "We wanted some specific kids to get out and compete."

Valencia also had some athletes compete, and Colton Berkery finished third in the pole vault by clearing 12-6. Teammate Andrew Crane was fourth after clearing 12-0.

The Vikings were able to participate only in the pole vault because the postponement of the meet made it an all-comers meet in field events, meaning it was open to anyone who wanted to participate.

Sixteen schools were scheduled to attend Saturday's continuation of the meet, including Notre Dame and Pasadena, which replaced some of the schools that couldn't return this weekend.

One of those schools was West Ranch, which set a meet record in the girls 4x1600 relay last weekend by finishing in 22:04.43.

"It would have been nice to have West Ranch and Buena and some of these other schools' distance runners," Broneer said. "The rain killed us. We started scrambling to get teams. I'm just glad we got three or four more teams."
