If that’s the case, then Foothill League winter sports teams should be highly respected given the competition they faced in the postseason.
A total of 15 Foothill League teams made the playoffs, and six of the schools that knocked out a local team either played for a regional title in soccer or are still alive for a state championship in basketball.
The Canyon boys soccer team made a historic run to the CIF-SS Division III semifinals, becoming only the second boys soccer team in Santa Clarita Valley history to make a CIF semifinal after Saugus did it in 2007.
When they got there, the Cowboys fell to Paramount High on penalty kicks, but Paramount went on to win the sectional title and then the CIF Southern California Regional Division I championship with a 2-0 victory over Dos Pueblos this past Saturday.
In California, soccer season concludes after the regional championships.
The Saugus girls soccer team bowed out in the CIF-SS Div. II quarterfinals to Flintridge Sacred Heart, which went on to win the CIF Southern California Regional Div. III championship with a 2-1 victory over Francis Parker of San Diego last Friday.
The Canyon girls, meanwhile, fell to Beckman of Irvine in the CIF-SS Div. II playoffs. The Patriots proceeded to finish as runners-up in both the section and the CIF Southern California Regional Div. II playoffs, where they lost to Granite Hills of Apple Valley 2-1.
The Foothill League ran into championship squads on the basketball court, too.
After eliminating Golden Valley, Serra of Gardena won the CIF-Southern Section Div. IIIA title and has advanced to the CIF State Division III final four.
Serra will face Centennial of Compton in the state semifinals Saturday at noon at the Galen Center on USC’s campus.
The West Ranch boys basketball team played Compton High tough for the first half before falling in the CIF-SS Div. IIAA playoffs.
Since then, Compton has advanced to the CIF State Division II semifinals, where it will face Lincoln High of San Diego at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Galen Center.
On the girls side, West Ranch fell to Brea Olinda in the CIF-SS Div. IIAA postseason. Since then, Brea Olinda not only ran away with the sectional title but also advanced to the CIF State Div. II semifinals, where the Wildcats will face Mater Dei of Santa Ana at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Galen Center.
In addition to all those teams, Burbank High’s boys basketball squad went on to reach the CIF State Div. II tournament after ousting Canyon, as did Summit of Fontana, which knocked out Saugus.
The Canyon girls basketball team bowed out against Edison of Huntington Beach, which reached the second round of the CIF State Div. II tournament.
