As a tribute to a fallen comrade, deputies assigned to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station will wear long-sleeve, Class "A" uniforms with a tie and drive with their headlights on today.

Deputy Arthur E. Pelino was shot and killed by a violent, mentally deranged man who managed to wrest the deputy's gun during a struggle on March 19, 1978, according to a sheriff's statement.

Pelino, a resident deputy in Gorman, had arrested the man and took him back to his office to start the booking process when the fight began.

Pelino was with the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department for 21 years and was survived by his wife, three sons, and three daughters.

More than three decades later, deputies assigned to the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station will take a moment to honor his memory at shift briefings.

The department encourages Santa Clarita Valley residents to join them in the tribute by also using headlights day and night.
