The last time the Hart boys swim team did not win the Foothill League title was in 1996.
According to most Foothill League coaches, Valencia has the best chance of ending that run this season.
Apparently, the Indians aren't quite ready to pass the mantle.
Hart led by four points heading into the final event of the day thanks to key swims in the 100-yard backstroke and 100 breaststroke, and the Indians' 400-freestyle relay team of Mitch Johnson, Alex Ngan, Chris Cogswell and Konrad Antoniuk clinched an 88-82 win over the Vikings on Wednesday at the Santa Clarita Aquatic Center.
The Hart girls, meanwhile, won 126-44.
For the boys, the victory pushed their Foothill League dual meet win streak to 69.
"This could make or break our season," said Hart head coach Steve Neale. "As much of a confidence boost (as it was), it could have been a javelin to the heart."
Down 66-58 with three events remaining, the Indians finished first, second and fourth in the 100 backstroke, led by Cogswell's first-place time of 59.65 seconds. They also finished first, third and fifth in the 100 breaststroke, led by Justin Farr's time of 1 minute, 5.59 seconds.
Going into the 400-freestyle relay, Hart rallied for an 80-76 lead.
Valencia needed to finish at least first and third in the final event to win.
But with a time of 3:17.82, the Indians held on.
Antoniuk swam the final leg.
"I was on my feet the whole meet," he said. "I swim this event all the time, but that was the best."
Individually, Antoniuk won the 200 freestyle (1:47.16) and 500 freestyle (4:47.18).
The Hart boys also got wins from Ngan (50 freestyle, 22.32, and 100 freestyle, 49.10) and the 200-freestyle relay team of Wilson Bellows, Johnson, Hayden Scott and Ngan (1:36.35).
Bob Hwang was a double winner for the Vikings, taking the 200 individual medley in 2:01.10 and the 100 butterfly with a time of 53.27.
Valencia's 200-medley relay team of Stephen Haw, Jonathan Hwang, Bob Hwang and Bryan Kitchener took first in 1:43.52.
"I knew if we didn't have a big lead going into the backstroke and breaststroke, we'd only win by few," said Valencia head coach Mike Bechtholdt. "We needed a 20-point lead."
On the girls' side, Hart's Maggie Hanson led the way only a few days after taking third place at the Millikan Relays.
Hanson won the 200 IM (2:11.15) and 100 butterfly (58.58), while teammate Nicole Antoniuk took first in the 500 freestyle (5:08.53) and 100 breaststroke (1:10.03). The Indians' Sam Asencio took first in the 50 freestyle (25.41), Nina Morrison won the 200 freestyle (1:55.52) and Megan Schultz took the 100 backstroke (1:03.91). Hart also swept the relays.
Micaela Velasquez recorded the Vikings' lone win with a time of 53.96 in the 100 freestyle.
"The girls are a steamroller," Neale said.
