After a week off from Foothill League competition, Hart swimming’s confidence is beginning to grow.

But it didn’t come out unscathed.

Canyon’s girls team earned a big win over the Indians in the 200-yard medley relay, but Hart went on to win on the girls’ side 107-63 and on the boys’ side 113-57 on Tuesday at the Santa Clarita Aquatic Center.

“(The teams) are really starting to gel,” said Indians head coach Steve Neale. “They are really starting to believe in each other.”

For the Canyon girls (5-1, 2-1), their first dual-meet loss of the season came with mixed emotions thanks to a pair of individual wins by Kearsten Livingstone and Allison Morales.

It also helped that they handed Hart its first loss in the 200-medley relay in recent memory.

“They’ve been working really hard and it is starting to pay off,” said Cowboys head coach Steve Himes. “We’ve been working really hard on our finishes.”

In the end, the depth of the Indian girls (5-0, 3-0) and boys (4-1, 3-0) was too much to overcome.

On the girls’ side, Hart’s Nicole Antoniuk won the 200 individual medley in 2 minutes, 11.7 seconds, as well as the 500 freestyle (5:08.20). Maggie Hanson won the 200 freestyle (1:57.04), followed by Hayley Good and Melanie Onnen to complete the sweep. Kelli Miller won the 100 breaststroke (1:11.32), while the 200-freestyle relay team of Nicolette Barreiro, Nina Morrison, Sam Asencio and Good placed first in 1:42.67, as did the 400-freestyle relay team of Good, Morrison, Asencio and Hanson (3:46.16).

The Hart boys got a pair of wins from Alex Ngan (100 butterfly, 53.10 and 100 backstroke, 55.05), while Konrad Antoniuk took the 200 IM (2:03.07) and Mitch Johnson won the 100 freestyle (52.78). Wilson Bellows won the 100 freestyle (52.78), followed by Justin Farr and Daniel McGowen for the 1-2-3 finish. With combinations of Antoniuk, Johnson, Ngan, Grant Miladin, Chris Cogswell and Geoffrey Moore, the Indians swept all three relays.

According to Neale, his teams may have been a step off their usual pace due to spring break.

“You work so hard, don’t give it all back,” he said of the layoff. “We fight that every year.”

For Canyon, Livingstone won the 100 butterfly (57.67) and 100 backstroke (59.55), while Morales took the 50 freestyle (25.08) and 100 freestyle (54.49). Both girls combined with Karina Rodgers and Adria Morales for the victory in the 200-medley relay (1:53.65).

“There was nothing we could do about that relay,” Neale said.

The Canyon boys (3-3, 1-2) got individual wins from Matt Howard (200 freestyle, 1:51.76) and Nui Harris, who overcame a sprained ankle to win the 500 freestyle in 23.12.

“(The day) was good,” Himes said. “The kids worked hard. There were a lot of battles for second and third. It was exciting.”
