Saugus sprinter Jawhar Purdy runs the last leg of the 4x100-meter relay on Thursday at Golden Valley High School.

Despite a loss to Canyon to start the Foothill League season, the Saugus boys track and field team knows there’s still plenty to fight for.

“We were disappointed with the loss to Canyon, but it’s been awhile since we’ve finished lower than No. 2,” said Saugus head coach Christian Standley. “We’ve just got to go get it.”

Thursday’s meet gave the Centurions a big lift.

The Centurions edged the up-and-coming Golden Valley boys 70-66 thanks to the throws, while the Saugus girls won 99-32 at Golden Valley High School.

With each boys team possessing depth on the track and in the jumps, Saugus’ dominance in the throws made the biggest difference.

That dominance might actually be best illustrated by a Golden Valley thrower. The Grizzlies’ Brian Luey set a school record in the discus with a toss of 130 feet, but it was only good enough for third place and a single point.

Daniel Whitham swept the discus and shot put with throws of 150 feet and 47-0 1/4, respectively while Brian Faussett was second in both events for the Saugus boys (3-1, 2-1).

Luey acknowledged that the Golden Valley throwers are coming along but still need to improve.

“We just need to get in the weight room and get our form and everything down,” he said.

Saugus’ Landon Shaw won the pole vault by clearing 13-9, Ian Engle won the triple jump with a leap of 41-0 1/2 and Corey Lindner won the high jump by clearing 6-0.

On the track, Saugus earned just three first-place finishes, with Robert Pion winning the 3,200-meter run in 9 minutes, 43.69 seconds, the 4x100 relay team winning in 44.10 seconds and Demetrious Cisneros earning a surprise victory in the 200-meter dash at 23.60.

Golden Valley won every other event on the track, but Saugus earned a ton of second places and several thirds to compensate.

“We did really well,” Cisneros said. “We knew we had to win and we pulled through.”

For the Grizzlies, Earl Johnson surged over the final 20 meters to win the 100 in 11.28 seconds, while Corey Chaisson won the 400 at 50.78. Kristian Martinez won the 800 in 2:01.91 and Seth Totten won the 1,600 at 4:29.26.

Golden Valley (3-2, 1-2) swept the hurdles with William Small taking the 110 hurdles in 16.81 seconds and Michael Bryce winning the 300 hurdles in 43.36.

The 4x400 relay team was also victorious in 3:33.38, and Eric Olila added a victory in the field by leaping 20-9 1/2 in the long jump.

“Part of it is we’re really young,” said Golden Valley co-head coach Chris Evans. “Of all the scorers, only Totten and Michael Bryce were seniors. We’re just a little bit inexperienced.”

The same could be said of Golden Valley’s girls team, which went up against the four-time defending league champion Saugus girls (4-0, 3-0).

The day started on a strange note, with the Grizzlies’ 4x100 relay team being disqualified due to a false start and Saugus later being disqualified for an illegal handoff. The gaffs accounted for the unusual final score.

Saugus’ Amber Wright won the 100 in 12 seconds flat and the 200 in 26.01, and she was also a member of the winning 4x400 relay team that finished in 9:01.8.

It’s the third straight league meet that Wright has swept the 100 and 200, and both of Thursday’s times are league lows.

“I feel I could have done better but I’m my own worst critic,” Wright said. “Where I was at the end last year, that’s where I’m starting this year.”

Jenna Vincej won the 400 in 57.65 seconds, while Stephanie Bulder won the 800 in 2:19.79 and Karis Frankian won the 1,600 in 5:19.11.

Saugus limited its top distance runners Thursday in order to save energy for this weekend’s Mt. San Antonio College Relays.

Golden Valley’s Weslie Totten capitalized by winning the 3,200 in 12:05.70, while Maddie Hardesty won the 100 hurdles in 16.43.

The Grizzlies (2-3, 1-2) also scored victories in the long jump, where Kristine Tan leaped 16-0, and the pole vault, where Stephanie Winter cleared 9-0.

“We’re making lots of progress on the girls side,” Evans said. “Totten won the two-mile. I know (Saugus) held girls out but we never had a girl win the two-mile.”

Saugus thrower Alex Ecsedy won the discus with a toss of 108-4 and the shot put at 38-7, while Lindsay Lovio won the triple jump with a leap of 32-0.

Chelsea Alpern won the 300 hurdles at 49.65 and Monica Allen won the high jump by clearing 5-0.
