Both Sound Vibrations, Hart's advanced mixed group, and Hartbreakers, Hart's advanced women's group came in first place in their divisions, while competing against some of the top show choirs in the country.
In addition to this prestigious award, the group also received best choreography for their dance numbers, while two of choir's talented students went on to win individual awards.
Miky Tayoba was voted Most Outstanding Male Performer and Alyssa Adair won Most Outstanding Female Vocalist.
The choirs have been fundraising all year to be able to attend the competition. The highlight of the trip was the performance held at Lincoln Center.
Students stayed near Times Square in Manhattan, and visited the Empire State Building, Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.
"Show choir has been working around the clock this semester perfecting their sets and routines and is getting better and better as the competition season continues," said Gail Hart, director of Hart's show choir. "The level of professionalism is amazing for a high school group."
Hart's show choir is among the top show choirs in California. The group has been named Grand Champions at many show choir competitions in the past five years. In the past few years the choir has competed in competitions in San Francisco, Orlando, Illinois and Hawaii.
In the past month, Hart's show choir was filmed as the featured show choir for a documentary to be shown on television in Great Britain right after "Glee," the network show about the inner workings of a high school show choir.
The film crew came to Hart High to document Hart's show choir during practices and performances. "This was a fun and exciting experience for the choir students and will show the audience what a real show choir is like," said Hart.
All four show choir groups, Sweetharts, Hart ‘n' Soul, Hartbreakers and Sound Vibrations will appear in the annual spring concert May 19-21. The community is invited to attend.
Hart said she is actively seeking students to be new members of the Hart choir for next year. Hart High is an open enrollment school, so any student in the Hart District that is interested is welcome to audition for the 2010-11 show choir. An audition clinic will be held the week of April 26-30.
