If Saturday's CIF-Southern Section Division III track and field prelims are any indication, Golden Valley is making some good strides.

The Grizzlies advanced three athletes at Estancia High School, while Valencia's Jasmine Hall qualified for the girls high jump finals at the Div. I prelims at Trabuco Hills High.

The top nine marks qualify for the CIF finals in the field events, while on the track, the heat winners automatically qualify for the finals along with the next best times until nine total finalists are accumulated.

For Golden Valley, Lauren Hackney won her heat in the girls 400-meter run with a time of 58.17 seconds to qualify, while Seth Totten ran the boys 3,200 with a time of 9 minutes, 21 seconds to advance to the finals.

In the boys 110 hurdles, Joey Darko won his heat in 14.61 seconds, the fourth-fastest overall time.

Golden Valley co-head coach Chris Evans expressed his pleasure with how Hackney, Totten and Darko ran their races.

"This is the most we've ever taken to the CIF finals," Evans said. "In our history, we've only had two athletes go, and now we've got three. It just shows that we're building something strong and we're very excited about it."

At the Div. I prelims, Hall cleared 5 feet, 4 inches to finish as the ninth and final qualifier.

Despite the close call, Valencia head coach Jeff Gilkey is encouraged by Hall, who hasn't trained much in the high jump since hurting her knee in early April.

"She just didn't seem on today, and yet she kind of shook it off and got through it," he said. "It was just a relief she was able to get through this and qualify. Every week the knee gets stronger. Now we're hoping she can focus on the high jump."

The CIF-SS finals for all divisions will be held next Saturday at Cerritos College.
