An explosion in Newhall early Monday startled awake some residents, but the culprit was illegal fireworks.

Santa Clarita Valley sheriff’s deputies investigated the report of an explosion at 13th and Spruce streets after residents heard a loud blast about 2:56 a.m.  —  possibly a firecracker, said Sgt. Gary Parker.

When deputies arrived, they found no explosives, he said. The only evidence of the blast, Parker said, was a damaged garbage dumpster.
