Ten local business and community leaders were honored with Golden Apple Awards on Monday for their contributions to local public education.
“It’s a chance to really thank those people that come into our schools and make them the wonderful institutions that they are,” said Josh Randall, president of the Santa Clarita Valley Association of California School Administrators, which organizes the annual honor.
This year’s recipients were selected by administrators from each of the five local school districts, which include Saugus Union, William S. Hart Union High, Sulphur Springs, Newhall and Castaic Union school districts.
Saugus Union honored Michael Onuscheck of Boston Scientific and Steve Youlios and Mike Wilson of Jersey Mike’s; the William S. Hart Union High School District honored Capt. Paul Becker of the SCV Sheriff’s Station and Kelly Chulick of the Regional Occupational Program’s Fire Academy; Sulphur Springs selected board member Michael Hogan and Roxanne Jeppesen of Cultivating Creative Minds; Newhall chose Ian Pari of the city of Santa Clarita and John Blum of the Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Foundation; and Castaic Union honored Kari Meyers of the Valley Trauma Center and Rachel Shaw, a senior consultant with Monjaras & Wismeyer Group Inc.
“It’s neat to see the variety,” said Randall, who is also Sulphur Springs Community School principal. “It really shows that this is a community that’s behind their schools.”
The winners were honored this week with a dinner at the Santa Clarita Sports Complex. As part of the award, the honorees were given a piece of framed student artwork, Randall said.
