Not one, but two members of the Lopes family have been announced as invitees to USA Baseball teams.

Valencia High junior-to-be Christian Lopes was selected to the 18U National Team Trials and Valencia sophomore-to-be Timmy Lopes will participate in the 16U Trials.

Christian Lopes is one of 34 players who will compete for a place on the 18U final roster that will compete in the Pan American Junior Championships in Barquisimeto, Venezuela, beginning Sept. 25.

He will compete in trials in Cary, N.C., on Sept. 17.

Timmy Lopes will compete in trials beginning Aug. 1 for a spot on the 16U team that will compete in Taiwan for the World Youth Championships beginning Aug. 15.

Christian was a member of last year’s 16U team that won a Pan Am championship.

“I’m more than proud of my brother,” Christian said. “Coming off an injury to his hamstring to battle and get where he is, he is well-deserving.”

Both teams will make final cuts down to 18 players.

Timmy played in five games for the Valencia varsity team in 2009, collecting one hit in five at bats. The one hit was a grand slam against Canyon on April 17.

Christian was the Foothill League and Signal’s player of the year in 2009, having batted .453 and establishing a Santa Clarita Valley and Foothill League record with 15 home runs. He also added 33 RBIs.
