UPDATE - Due to the brush fires, and the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department mobilization, the escape drill planned for this Friday, Sept. 4 has been cancelled and will be rescheduled at a later date.
Deputies from the Los Angeles County Sheriff Department's Emergency Operations Center at the Pitchess Detention Center will be conducting an inmate escape drill and routine test of the escape siren systems on Friday, September 4 beginning at 10 a.m. at the Pitchess Detention Center North County Correctional Facility in Castaic.
These sirens are utilized as one method to alert the surrounding communities in the event there is an actual escape from the Pitchess Detention Center.
Sheriff's maintenance staff will be stationed at each siren location to verify proper operation.
Other emergency notification systems, such as the Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff Station's Web site at scvsheriff.com and emergency notification phone tree systems will also be activated and tested in some areas.
The notification sirens are located in the Castaic and Stevenson Ranch areas along the Interstate 5 Freeway.
Santa Clarita Valley residents, schools, and business representatives are to be notified that the drill, emergency notifications, system activations and deployment of personnel is only a full scale test and training operation in preparation for an actual escape or similar emergency requiring public notification.
Should an actual event occur on or about the same time as this training exercise public notification will be made.
It should be noted that the last escape or inmate worker walk-away from any of the jail facilities on the PDC grounds occurred more than two years ago in March 2007. Sheriff's officials attribute that fact to training drills such as this one, enhanced security and response protocols and updated operational standards/procedures.
