A motorcycle deputy was injured in a collision Friday afternoon in Newhall that left his bike mangled.
He was rushed to Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital, where he was treated for apparently minor injuries, authorities said.
About 3:20 p.m., a deputy was traveling from southbound Railroad Avenue onto eastbound Newhall Avenue toward Highway 14 when an oncoming GMC pick-up truck hit the front end of the motorcycle, said Los Angeles County sheriff's Sgt. Brian Allen.
The impact sent the deputy flying through the air, witnesses said.
No other injuries were reported, Allen said.
Witnesses said the driver of the pick-up truck appeared to have run a red light, but deputies did not issue any citations or make any arrests.
Deputies stood around the wrecked patrol motorcycle, which lay in the center of the intersection of Railroad and Newhall avenues Friday afternoon as they investigated the cause of the crash. The motorcycle was on its side, its front tire twisted, surrounded by shattered glass.
"It looks like it was just an accident at this time," Allen said.
Deputies closed off about 100 feet of southbound Railroad Avenue just north of the crash site. They diverted southbound traffic onto Newhall Avenue, resulting in some commuter backup.
