Former Santa Clarita resident Neshia Brathwaite Farhangi returns to the stage at the world-famous Comedy Store nightclub on Sunset Boulevard in West Hollywood Sunday, Nov. 22 at 7:30 p.m.
Neshia grew up in Saugus, graduated from Saugus High, attended College of the Canyons and transferred to CSUN to complete her degree in English literature. She went on to receive her Master's Degree from the National University.
Her father, Louis Brathwaite, was one of the founding fathers of Santa Clarita. He was a vital member of the William S. Hart Union High School District Board and served on the city's Planning Committee.
After graduating college, Neshia taught middle and high school students for the Los Angeles, Norwalk-La Mirada and Long Beach school districts. Her sense of humor inspired her students to see the fun in learning, and it was not uncommon for her to sing silly songs to help teach a subject to a class.
It was there that her students encouraged her to try a career in stand-up comedy.
Neshia has always had a passion for public speaking and now hosts an Internet talk show appropriately titled "Neshia's Talk Show." Her guest stars have included Aries Spears ("Mad TV"), Daniel DiCrisicio ("Paula Jones vs. President Clinton"), James Rhine ("Big Brother") and Drew Waters ("Friday Night Lights").
She hopes to eventually gain enough experience in comedy and talk shows to have her own version of "The Tonight Show."
In her comedy bits, Neshia focuses on the funny, ordinary parts of her life, like having to deal with an over-controlling grandmother, explaining the idiosyncrasies of having a mom from the unknown country of "Guiana," and singing Paul McCartney's "Yesterday" in every musical style from jazz to rap.
"It's my goal to show that everyone has a unique purpose in life, whether that is in teaching, stand-up comedy or any other discipline," Neshia said. "I also like keeping my comedy clean because it makes my comedy stand apart from the normal routines."
Neshia has become a monthly regular at the Comedy Store and plans to continue pursuing her career in the public spotlight. Among many other pursuits, she models shoes, is featured in commercials (including a recent infomercial for Black and Decker) and performs sketches on Melrose Comedy Reality.
She was also recently signed to the H-E-R indie record label run by Howard Rice, and plans to release her first single early next year, followed by her first album as early as summer.
"The person who inspires me the most in comedy is my best friend and husband, Omid Farhangi," Neshia said. "He makes me laugh and enjoy life."
The Comedy Store has launched the careers of many successful comics including David Letterman, Jim Carrey and Sam Kinnison. The club's performers provide a gamut of stand-up ranging from raw comedy to polished bits.
