Some local history will be made right after Midnight on Thursday morning.

The Golden Valley football team will hold its first practice under the lights, in a two-hour long shindig nicknamed "Midnight Maneuvers".

The event is the first of its kind in recent Santa Clarita high school history.

"We think it's a fun way for the kids to get out there," Golden Valley head coach Steve Pinkston said. "The kids are dying to get out there. We get to be the first team in the Santa Clarita Valley to practice."

While teams like Canyon practice at 9 a.m. on Friday, the Grizzlies get a jump on the competition, however slight.

Golden Valley kicks off the football season in the area, playing a nonleague game against Littlerock on Sept. 4 at 7:30 p.m. at College of the Canyons.

"It's a team unity kind of thing," Pinkston said. "We're doing some team building."

Pinkston said he has not heard of a team from the SCV practicing at midnight before.

Neither have other area football coaches.

"To my recollection it's never been done before," said Hart football head coach Mike Herrington, who is entering his 20th season at the high school, "Some basketball teams have had their first practice at around midnight."
