From its numerous anchor tenants to its visible location off Highway 14, The Plaza at Golden Valley is set to offer Canyon Country, as well as the rest of the Santa Clarita Valley a list of shopping options in the coming months.

The 620,000-square-foot retail center located between Golden Valley Road and Via Princessa will include Lowe's, Target, Kohl's and a Bed, Bath & Beyond, according to Alex Liftis, senior vice president of development of Terramar Retail Centers.

Liftis expects the Kohl's clothing store to open in the fall, as early as October.

Liftis said while the final list of retailers is not yet available, he said construction is still continuing on some parts and the company has planned to open The Plaza in phases.

"We will be opening from fall to spring of next year," he said.

Jason Crawford, economic development manager for the city, said there will also be a Circuit City, as well as numerous restaurants, including Chili's.

"This is great," he said. "The first power center of its kind on the east side of Santa Clarita."

Crawford expects The Plaza to be a "destination retail center," drawing in people from the local area, as well as commuters driving on Highway 14 towards Palmdale and Lancaster.

For them, he believes, "It might make more sense to stop off there and do whatever shopping they have and wait out traffic."

Liftis recognized the "excellent access" shoppers have to The Plaza and its increased impact.

"We are hoping to capitalize on the current needs in that community" as well as provide services for those who travel on the highway," he said.

As for the thought of traffic being reduced on Soledad Canyon Road, which connects Canyon Country to Valencia, Crawford believes a number of factors will lead to lighter traffic on the heavily-traveled road.

"There's a lot of things we're doing with the cross-valley connector," he said, adding that creating jobs in the city's east side will contribute to improved traffic conditions.
