Devon Goff may not have been the fastest Canyon girls runner Saturday, but she was its most important one.

With a time of 19 minutes, 54.4 seconds on the Castaic Lake course, Goff broke a tie with Highland of Palmdale in the Division I and II race.

The Cowboys' fifth runner finished the three-mile girls run in 16th place at the 24th annual Santa Clarita Valley Invitational.

Goff was faster than Highland's fifth runner, Rachael Cortina, who finished 32nd (20:31.3).

Both teams scored 50 points, with the close-as-a-shave win going to Canyon. Taft High from Bakersfield finished third.

Just as important to the Cowgirls' efforts were Elvia Contreras, who finished 25th (20:16.7) and Melissa Telles, who crossed the finish line at 27th (20:18.8).

Both trail runners helped push Cortina down further in the standings.

If either girl finished behind Cortina, Highland would have scored 48 points to win the meet.

"We couldn't have won it without them," said Canyon head coach Paul Broneer. "When I saw them (Highland), I thought they were going to win. I was waiting for their fifth runner, but I didn't see her yet. It's a team sport, and that showed today."

Highland was ahead after four runners finished second, third, sixth and seventh to score 18 points. Canyon's first four came in at fourth, fifth, 12th and 13th, scoring 34 points.

Hayley Parkinson finished fourth overall (18:52.7). Jessica Gatton was fifth (19:03.8).

Alyssa Selve came in 12th (19:45.6), followed by Gillian Lopez (19:48.7).

With a score of 112, Canyon came in third out of 14 teams.

Thomas McGuan finished eighth (15:50.9), Michel Noris was 13th (16:28.6). Mason Bouchet came in 22nd (16:51.6), Joe Pineda was 37th (17:07.1).

Golden Valley dominated the Division III through V boys meet, wrapping up one of the first victories as an athletic program this season.

The top four runners all finished in the top 11.

Grizzlies runner Seth Totten won the three-mile run at 15:44.7, well ahead of Steven Melena of Eastside (15:52.9).

Totten's teammate Johnny Tapia finished sixth (16:31.5). Luc Schutz crossed the finish line in ninth (16:38.3). Elie Boutros (11th, 16:40.8), Danny Carillo (17th, 16:54.9) rounded out the top five Golden Valley runners who scored.

Golden Valley's girls team finished fifth out of 17 teams. The Grizzlies were led by a sixth-place finish by Lauren Nygren (20:09.6). Misty Mello came in 26th (21:18.1), then Rachel Schram was 33rd (21:35.5).

Canyon won the junior varsity girls race, with the boys finishing second in the JV boys race. The Cowboys also won the boys frosh-soph race.
