If all goes to plan, Santa Clarita Valley drivers will be able to use the eight-and-a-half mile cross-valley connector roadway linking Canyon Country and Valencia as early as 2010, a city official said Friday.

All city workers need to build is one quarter-mile bridge that runs over the Santa Clara River and connects Golden Valley Road to Highway 126 through the northern edge of Valencia.

"This is the end. The last leg of the $245 million cross-valley connector road," said Gail Ortiz, city spokeswoman.

The Santa Clarita City Council will vote Tuesday on whether to approve the plans and specifications and award a construction contract worth $21,223,403 to Rancho Cordova-based C.C. Meyers, Inc. for construction of the bridge.

Along with the main contract, the council will decide whether to award various construction support contracts totaling $2,165,000 to other organizations.

Once approved, construction will last 14 months, Ortiz said.

"We are on the big countdown," Ortiz said.

City officials view the cross-valley connector as a way to relieve congestion on heavily-used city streets like Soledad Canyon Road and the intersection at Bouquet Canyon and Soledad Canyon roads.

"It's the first major east-west alternate roadway in this valley," Ortiz said. "This has been long needed."

The nine-year process to build the cross-valley connector involved numerous agencies and environmental approvals, Ortiz said.

Portions of the cross-valley connector were completed since the city initiated the project in 1999.

Building the final piece of the puzzle is a complex undertaking because of the dramatic topography of the river, Ortiz said.

Ortiz anticipates a Jan. 26 ground breaking ceremony for the final six-lane bridge.
