Signal Staff Writer Brian Charles usually covers cops and courts.

But from Jan. 9 to Jan. 23, 2009, Washington, D.C., was his beat.

As much of a pro as Charles is, this time, it was personal.

Charles and members of his immediate and extended family converged on the nation's capital to share an experience many of them never dreamed could happen.

Appearing in The Signal newspaper and online at The-Signal.com each day Jan. 9 through Jan. 23, and archived right here, "The Washington Journal: the Inauguration" is Charles' first-person account as he headed east for the swearing-in of Barack Obama, and kept that date with history.

Of course, the journalist in Charles couldn't resist connecting with other SCV locals who planned to make the trip, including a group of students from Academy of the Canyons.

He wrote an advance story for The Signal about the students' decision to attend the Inauguration, and what they (and their parents) were doing to fund and plan it.

Congressman Howard P. "Buck" McKeon, R-Santa Clarita, read Charles' story, and put aside enough inauguration admission tickets for the kids and their entourage to pick up at his office in Washington, D.C.

Brian Charles, too.

You got complete news coverage of the Inauguration from The Associated Press -- stories, photos, video -- in The Signal newspaper and The-Signal.com.

But Charles' "Washington Journal: the Inauguration" series is an exclusive feature of The Signal and The-Signal.com, and with a local point of view.

We invite you to join him on the journey. Just click on the story links in "Related Content."

And now that he's returned from the streets of the nation's capital to the streets of the SCV, be sure to read Charles' top-notch local cops and courts reporting once again in The Signal and online right here at The-Signal.com.
