Saugus stops Canyon in its tracks

The Saugus boys track and field team ended Canyon's 45 consecutive dual meet win streak on the Cowboys home turf on Thursday.

The Centurions defeated Canyon, 77-59.

This is the first win against Canyon for the Saugus boys team since 1986.

" Going into the match today we knew we had nothing to lose," Saugus head coach Christian Standley said.

"I told my team to go all out and have no shame in doing so." he said.

Dominating for the Saugus team was Josh Coefield, who was the only triple winner for the Centurions, placing first in the long jump (20 feet 1 1/2 inches), 100-yard sprint (11.2), and the 200 (23.2).

Brandon Jauregui was a double winner for the Centurions.

Jauregui placed first in the 1600 coming in at 4:33 and at 9:50 in the 3200.

Also strong for the Saugus team was Mario Wright who came in first place in the 110 hurdles in 16 flat.

Saugus' varsity girls team also defeated Canyon, 82-54.

Katie Dunn was a double winner for the Centurions.

Dunn placed first in the 1600 (5:11.6) and the 3200 (11:19).

The Cowboys JV girls team did fend off the Centurions defeating them 74-62 while Canyon's freshman/sophomorre boys team defeated Saugus, 96-40.
