Some might argue that this is a football town.

Others might say baseball, softball or even volleyball.

But golf has entered the equation lately.

With the success over the last five years of junior golfers and one professional, Jason Gore, and the abundance of courses in the area, golf is thriving.

Identifying that, TPC Valencia, just five years old, is seeking to increase its membership.

The country club opened up its course Monday to over 100 prospective members for what it called "Member for a Day."

Community and business leaders and golf aficionados were invited to try out the course Monday.

It's a different approach from a country club as non-members are rarely invited to try out a course.

It was the brainchild of Anthony Falasca, the club's new director of membership sales.

"Everybody says it's the best kept secret," Falaska said of TPC Valencia. "I don't want it to be a secret anymore."

TPC Valencia opened in 2003. Champions Tour player and 1998 Masters winner Mark O'Meara consulted on the design of the par-72, 7,220-yard course.

It went private in 2006, yet still has a public restaurant on its grounds.

The golf, though, is its bread and butter.

Fourteen TPC members were ambassadors for the day and showed prospective members the course.

"It's a good way to preview the course," said non-member Doug Waite, a Sand Canyon resident who works as an accountant. "A lot of times you have to approach the general manager cold."

Waite, who is a member at Lakeside Golf Club in Burbank, said the usual path for a prospective country club member entails knowing a member who will then show the course off.

Valencia Acura owner Don Fleming served as an ambassador Monday.

A golf aficionado, Fleming is also a member at Valencia Country Club.

He said the prevailing comments he heard about TPC was the beauty of the course, but he noted how it's also a characteristic of some of the other area courses.

"It's almost become a destination for golf," Fleming said of the Santa Clarita Valley.

It has been.

The Champions Tour has held the AT&T Champions Classic at Valencia Country Club eight consecutive years.

There are no immediate plans for TPC to draw a professional golf event.

Instead, the focus is to improve on hospitality, said new general manager Mike Vandergoes.

The course took a step Monday.
