The report from the investigation into Jeremiah Lasater's suicide at Vasquez High School last year will remain confidential pending a lawsuit filed by the Lasater family against the Acton Agua Dulce Unified School District, a school district official said.
"We're not able to talk about it because of the lawsuit," said Mark Distaso, school district board member, when asked about the status of the report.
Jeremiah Lasater killed himself in a Vasquez High School bathroom on Oct. 20, 2008. On the eve of the anniversary, school district officials stressed that the school and the community want to move forward from what they called a "painful day."
"People want to look forward and move ahead," Distaso said. "That's not to suggest that people don't remember what happened here last year."
There is no memorial planned by the district or by Vasquez High School, he said.
Lasater was a 14-year-old special education student at Vasquez High. Some in the community say he was picked on daily by other students.
The suicide exposed a deep division among Acton residents, with some claiming the problem was being "whitewashed" by the board and being "swept under the rug."
During an emotional special meeting of the school board just days after the suicide, staff members accused high-ranking members of the school of ignoring the constant bullying received by Lasater and other special-needs students.
School board officials have consistently said that Vasquez had a zero tolerance policy toward bullying and that no further changes were needed to stop bullying in the school.
"Part of the efforts we took to curb bullying occurred prior to the suicide," he said.
The school launched an investigation into Jeremiah Lasater's death less than two weeks after his suicide. Keenan and Associates, a risk management firm based in Torrance, was asked to piece together the events of the day while determining how prevalent bullying is on the Vasquez campus.
Keenan and Associates finished the report in early 2009, but when the Lasater family filed a lawsuit against the school district the report was held until the suit is settled, Distaso said.
Jeff Lasater, Jeremiah's father, was contacted for this story but on the advice of his lawyer, declined to make any comments related to the lawsuit.
Jeff Lasater has launched Project 51, a program dedicated to spreading awareness about the dangers of bullying and holding school districts accountable for the actions of bullies. Jeff Lasater claims those actions often go unpunished.
"You don't know how many times that the parents of the kids being bullied go to the schools to complain and nothing happens," he said.

Good for the Lasaters. I Hope this lawsuit exposes what is really going on in this environment. The rife indifference of "educators" and, particularly, administrators is unfortunately all too typical of the present day "educational" environment. The fact that these kids go to school in that dump off the side of the freeway known as "Vasquez High School." I hope Lasater never gives up on his quest.

"school and the community want to move forward from what they called a "painful day."
What a laughable statement, keep on not dealing with the reality and the cesspool you have there and you get far. The sad thing is that if the parents win the lawsuit (and they should) we tax payers are taken to the cleaners again by these inept school officials

Why is it the schools fault..how about going after the real bullies..or is it just about deep pockets?

Its the districts fault because they knew about the bullying and did NOTHING about it.

When will the school admit any wrong doing? they are so full of it its sickning! Yes they new about it. Let me tell you, I'll be 50 soon and I aint no sissy, but when I was this young mans age I too was a big kid who played football and was picked on. I complained once and was ridiculed by the Princable because I was bigger then the kids picking on me. I took it until I dropped out of school in 10 th grade, moved 15 miles away and got my courage to fight back. My point is some people think its funny a big kid gets picked on and its not!

Bullys are cowards and are the real wimps.I remember a kid in Jr.High School who bullied a kid for no reason other than to show off in front of the school.Unfortunately for him he stopped growing and I did,nt.He was at a social gathering I was at and alot of our school mates were at.I did more than bully him and shame him I put the fear of god in his behind.Even now if we cross paths I put a scare in him.Until he apoligizes I will continue to terrorize him.I remember bullying some people in high school and till this day I am ashamed of my behavior and if I had the chance I would apoligize profusely.I have told my kids about what I did and hope they learned something from that.If someone bullies my kid at school and the principal does'nt do anything then maybe axe handle therapy is in order. And may god have mercy on the father of the kid who bullies mine because I wont. While I dont want to see the school sued as I think the kids will lose school funding ,I would like to see the administrators and staff who neglected to take action to protect this young man fired at the minimum. Those people know who they are will have to live with Jeremiah's death for the rest of their lives. And to the parents who's kids attended the school when this occured,if you dont take action against the staff that neglected to intervene, you will have to live with being cowards for the rest of your lives.Shameful.
