The Signal ran a story last weekend regarding remarks I made at a rally in our city on Jan. 16 ("Kellar's war with words," Jan. 24).
The rally was in opposition to the government giving amnesty to the tens of thousands of illegal immigrants who are living in our country.
Some have called me a racist regarding this issue. Let me be perfectly clear on that point: I am not a racist.
I abhor racism in any form, shape or fashion. Our nation was founded on the principle that all men are created equal, and I hold that truth to be the foundation of our great country.
I recall an incident when I was in the Army back in 1965. Three other soldiers and I went into a pool hall in Mississippi, only to be denied the right to play because one of our group was black. I was totally incensed by this racism.
I have also witnessed other acts of racism while on the Los Angeles police force and as a local Realtor.
Racism is wrong and should never be tolerated.
However, the issue on the table is illegal immigrants and the failure of our government at all levels to deal with this "issue."
I am an American - a proud one - and I believe it is time we stand behind our laws and the principles that have made this nation great.
I appreciate the paper printing the remarks I made at the rally, because you can see them in the context of what I said. I cannot begin to tell you the number of Santa Clarita citizens who have contacted me over the years complaining about illegal immigrants and the impacts they have on our society.
I will name a few of the issues: Forty people living in one house and destroying our neighborhood and quality of life; emergency rooms with standing room only and no one speaking English; day laborers standing all over our streets taking a toll on our businesses and traffic.
That describes some of the issues on a local basis, but what about some of the larger ones? The impacts on our economy at every level of government are astronomical.
In Los Angeles County alone, a study conducted several years ago showed the cost of illegal immigrants to be $1 billion a year.
Multiply that over the entire state and you begin to get an appreciation of what illegal immigrants are costing us.
I am always amazed how no one in Sacramento will talk about the costs of illegal immigrants when the state is totally bankrupt.
Stop and think about the number of people in business who have played by the rules, paid their taxes and paid for insurance and all the other costs associated with being responsible, but who are now losing their businesses because illegal immigrants work for less - illegal immigrants who do not pay taxes or have insurance and send much of the money they earn to another country.
I feel strongly that it is time we stop this craziness and get back to protecting Americans.
I am a proud American, and I believe it is time we stand behind the laws and principles that have made this nation great.

WHAT?
Who? What? When? Where? Why? How?

Bob,
Never get suckered into defending yourself when your opponents whip the race card out of the deck. It's their own desperation showing through, as it's the only way they can try to defend their position in favor of amnesty.
It's a diversionary tactic, plain and simple, and should just be mocked or laughed off.
They're trying to put you in the position of proving a negative -- the old "I didn't beat my wife" routine -- and it's not only a waste of time, but you actually give it more validity than it's worth by even responding to it.

Mr Kellar,
Although I don't agree 100% with everything you said at the rally (I was there), I applaud you for your courage and integrity with regards to exercising your First Amendment Rights.
I agree with Brian. However, I am glad that you have taken this opportunity (here in the Signal) to clarify your position. But please keep in mind for the future- people LOVE TO USE SOUND BITES. Some people have NO PROBLEM taking statements out of context and repeating them so long as it serves their ideological objecives (to unite or to seperate people).
This can have a 'chilling' effect on free speech . Suggestion- When you speak in public, make sure to hand out a copy of your speech to reporters and to the citizens who have assembled to hear you. (I'm sorry if you did this- I did not receive anything so I dont know if you passed anything out). This might help a little. And remember- people may lift sentences or phrases from your speech and present them out of context as sound bites but at least you will have a hard copy of your speech as back-up.
In case you are not aware of it, people have been taking some of your comments made at that rally and have been repeating them (verbal, written, video) out of context in many cases- throughout the local community and are trying to make your statements as a 'wedge' tool to create a 'rallying point' which they can use to unify and DISTRACT (locally and state-wide) the citizens -distract the citizens from the major conflicts going on in Washington DC and internationally.
Don't allow them to do this.
Many times I have disgreed with your positions sir but I will stand up for your right to exercise your right to free speech.
You must speak clearly - say what you mean and mean what you say-AND DOCUMENT IT.
Many times-especially in the political arena- you dont get second chances to clear things up.

"Illegal" immigration will continue as long as it is profitable for the big-monied business interests who run public policy. Blaming politicians and holding rallies is pointless. Cut the head off the snake and make it a crime for any corporation, business or individual to hire any undocumented worker. But don't expect help from Sacramento because illegals DO pay taxes. They pay sales taxes, and Sacramento cannot afford to give up that revenue "fix." And don't expect help from Washington because our leaders don't believe in nations or borders anymore at least when it comes to making money. The big money has plans for America and it includes lowering our income and standard of living to the level of the rest of the world.

Mr. Kellar in my opinion you said nothing wrong. You speak the truth. People need to get past the over rated insane politcal correctness junk that the progressives have been feeding everyone for 20 years. Telling the truth whether it hurts or not is not a crime. People need a thicker skin, grow up and get back to reality. Mr. Kellar stand by your convictions and we will stand with you!!!! God Bless America!!!

As the US born daughter of LEGAL immigrants to the US I'd like to share this observation:
Immigrants of the past ASSIMILATED to their new chosen homeland. They learned the language of their new chosen homeland. Though still celebrating some of their old homeland's holidays & traditions, they ADDED / BLENDED in ones from their new chosen homeland too.
They didn't look at the US as a CASH COW/CASH REGISTER, with their allegiances to their country of birth.
Unlike immigrants of today, my parents in 1954 came with 2 suitcases, less than $100, a sponsor guaranteeing they would not be a burden to the US, never went back... and saw this as their new homeland. We were raised as AMERICANS loving this country... waving the US flag, not the flag of another country.

Thank you Bob Kellar!! Our country is finally waking up! There is nothing wrong with wanting what's right and honorable. Obey the laws of the country. What's so controversial about that?? People can't even reason anymore, it's very sad that we can't even agree on a basic principle of obey the law. Instead terms like "hate" or "bigot" get thrown around anytime somebody disagrees.

It may be up to the federal government to enforce immigration laws, but their inaction is affecting the lives of people in our city.
A local resident and sheriff's deputy was killed in the line of duty by an illegal immigrant. A brave woman spoke at tonight's city council meeting telling about being raped by an illegal immigrant. A local paramedic and father of two was hit and killed on Sierra Highway by an illegal immigrant ex-con, who was drunk at the time.
Just today, our governor talked about the 20,000 illegal immigrants in state prison (not including the local and county jails) that cost our state almost a billion dollars a year.
There is a reason we have immigration laws, we need to control who is coming in to our country. Thanks to Bob for having the guts to speak out about this issue.

We are lucky to have Councilman Bob Kellar on our City Council... a retired LAPD Supervisor, a veteran, a local business owner.
Thanks for speaking up for us Bob about ILLEGAL (aka "breaking the law") immigration. It's hurting the rest of us.

Thanks for voicing your opinion Mr. Kellar on this issue. Illegal immigration is an obvious, easy to identify problem of this state, where emotions run high. Why is it that I never hear about any other issues affecting the budget of California. Mr. Kellar, you would be taken more seriously if you mentioned the other factors contributing to the deficit. An issue that I have first hand knowledge of, is that of Medi-Cal recipient fraud. In my case, it involves close relatives of mine, my mother and father. My mother and father had a large amount of money in their possession, when my father was diagnosed with Alzhiemers. After my father was deemed incapacitated, my mother went to an Elder law attorney, and illegally obtained his part of the community property, so that he would appear to be destitute. There was a living trust already in place, and that was ignored, and they were granted Medi-Cal benefits for five years, to the tune of $400,000.00 tax payer dollars. Of course she did this to please my greedy older sister, then continued the fraud of disinheriting myself and children. The lawyer that writes this type of crime, works on Smyth Dr. I say crime because I was told by my mother, that if I ask for a copy of the living trust, "I might end up somewhere I won't want to be", and she also said, "If I ask for a copy of the living trust, I will make a lot of enemies". If anyone thinks this is an isolated case, quit being naive, you are paying the cost as taxpayers.

Breacher, Thanks for your concern. I can not tell you the pain and suffering that my wife and children have gone through due to the greed and fraud of my mother and sister. It lives with us on a daily basis.

I really like this valley, but all these racists really bug me. If it were just the old cranky racist "you kids get off my lawn" people it would be one thing. Their time on this earth is finite. But they seem to have spread their disease to younger and younger people under the labels of pro-America, law enforcement, anti illegal immigration (no.. they love LEGAL immigrants they don't hate brown people really - really).
It's really horrible.

Why do losers and cowards always have to call people racist when they disagree with their opinions? But please keep it up as the word racist is thrown around so often it has lost the sting it once had.So keep crying wolf as being called a racist now a days is no worse than being called a bum.Racist, racist, racist who cares?Losers and cowards have to use the race card. How sad and pathetic.Get a life already.

Really, Mr. Keller, you are not a racist.. How about a bigot and a liar.
It's time for transparency in our City Council and a vote to remove all our encumbents from office, starting with you!
