In a sea of standout track and field athletes, Delano Howell of Hart was one who stood out.

He is The Signal's Track and Field Male Athlete of the Year.

Howell was not available for comment, as he prepares for his freshman football season at Stanford University.

This past season, Howell went undefeated in Foothill League meets in both the 200-meter dash and the long jump events.

Howell won the 200 in Foothill League meet with a time of 22.1 seconds.

He competed in four events for the Indians.

Howell won the 400-yard run, the long jump and the triple jump.

The first team for the track and field team is stellar and there are plenty of worthy candidates, both on the boys and girls teams.

"He's a phenomenal athlete," Hart head coach Steve Hubbell said. "He did whatever we needed him to be."

Thrower Daniel Swarbrick of Saugus went to the CIF State Track and Field Championships, where he finished fifth in the discus with a throw of 181 feet, 8 inches.

Swarbrick also won the CIF Southern Section Division I meet with a shot put of 59 feet, 11 1/2 inches and he was fourth in discus (160-8).

Fellow Centurion thrower Heather Snyder did the same, finishing eighth in the state meet with a discus throw of 136-5. She won the CIF Southern Section with a discus toss of 136-4 and was third in shot put (39-10 1/4).

Saugus won the Foothill League, with Hart second and Canyon third.

"You have to be willing to put the time in," Saugus head coach Christian Standley said. "They had to work and they did. They had God-given talent. What they did with that talent was what made them unique."

Jimmy Kelley of Hart also competed in the state finals at Cerritos College, in the 3,200-meter run. Thrower Spencer Lloyd of Hart also excelled.

Katie Dunn of Saugus advanced to the 3,200 in the CIF Finals. Anne Randall competed in the Masters meet. Alyson Rudd led the team's overall scoring and she went to the CIF preliminary meet in the hurdles. Erin Nortega led in the triple and long jump events.

Mario Wright was a multiple-event monster for Saugus, high-jumping 6-foot-4, competing in the high hurdles and triple jump, where he advanced to the CIF Prelims.

Josh Coefield and Baxter Frick helped the Centurions finish undefeated in the mile in league meets. Canyon had the league's No. 2 thrower, Courtney Saunders. Jessica Gatten was the Cowboys' top distance runner, while Gillian Lopez pole-vaulted 10-6, good for second on the team's all-time list.
