A proposed change to Santa Clarita’s city code would require property owners to get a permit before they alter or demolish property identified as a historic or potentially historic resource.

The Planning Commission will take a look at the proposed amendments at a public hearing Tuesday.

Sixty-four sites within the city limits would require the Historic Preservation Review, including Melody Ranch and William S. Hart Park and Museum in Newhall.

Exceptions include “alterations that do not affect the historic integrity of the resource and allow a property owner more expedient change in tenancy,” according to a city staff report.

The proposed code amendments would be in effect for three years from the date of approval. The amendments would be a temporary solution while the city works on a more permanent Historic Preservation Ordinance.
