Even though he did not win Saturday's King Taco Super Trucks race at Toyota Irwindale Speedway, Connor Cantrell worked for every foot, mile-per-hour and place he earned.
The second-place finish was among Cantrell's most impressive of the season, seeing as how he started in the No. 9 position of the 24-truck, 40-lap NASCAR race.
"This is the furthest he started back," said Jim Cantrell, team owner and father of the 17-year-old driver. "He came from a long way back."
Cantrell qualified for the second position, but started from the outside pole due to inverted order in which drivers roll dice and begin in a certain order.
"He was second with two laps to go," Jim Cantrell said. "He picked up four points in the standings. We are 12 points back with six races to go. So we're very much alive in the championship standings."
Defending champion Pat Mintey, Jr. leads the overall standings. Cantrell has four wins and Saturday was his second runner-up finish in Irwindale.
Cantrell is also looking for one more sponsor on the back of his Chevy S-10 truck.
Other local drivers involved Jimmy Rickart of Castaic, who finished 16th in Super Trucks. Rod Johnson Jr. from Canyon Country won the pole and he finished ninth.
