Madness is as madness does
Almost cut my 'stache It happened just the other day It's gettin' kinda long I could've said it was in my way But I didn't and I wonder why I feel like letting my freak flag fly (with apologies to Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young) So, you ask, "How is Mustache March shaping up at The Signal?" "Oh, the horror!" I exclaim. Of those who entered the competition, which was pitched to me as a ...

Tammy Messina: Homework makes for a better America
There are many issues to be addressed in our nation today, including energy, economy and health care. And with each one, there is a broad spectrum of ideologies suggested to resolve the issue. To say that these ideological differences cause plenty of controversy would be a gross understatement.

Michele Buttelman: Last call for Newsmakers event
Did you remember to "spring forward?" I like "falling back" much, much better, but, alas, I guess the world runs smoother when everyone is on the "same" schedule! Newsmakers Awards on Friday

Michele Buttelman: Newsmakers promises fun, entertainment
Welcome to my new space. I rather like the A3 page. I also think the newly redesigned Signal is pretty nifty looking. Newsmakers cometh March 19

Competitive stupidity, the highest of aspirations
So, it's possible I'm poking my head up too far and presenting a much better target here in the "regular paper," as opposed to my usual, sequestered and sheltered place-from-which-I-ambush in Escape. (Never fear, I plan to continue my rants there, as well, on alternate Fridays from this column.)

Lila Littlejohn: At 91, Signal gets a makeover
“A new look for The Signal,” the front-page headline proclaimed. “Local readers may not recognize The Signal when it arrives next week,” the story began, “but most of them will like it better than ever. The old newspaper will get a bright new look for the New Year.” It was January 1964 when The Signal — then nearly 45 years old — adopted the American eagle as its mascot, along with the mantra “Vigilance Forever.” ...

Michele E. Buttelman: The best time of year in the SCV
Isn't the rain we've had wonderful? What a great time of the year to get outside and walk or hike. It's beautiful and cool and my favorite time of the year in the Santa Clarita Valley. I hope you saw the fabulous Escape section on Friday that featured several wonderful hikes to try. Much thanks to Dianne Erskine-Hellrigel for helping us out!

Frank Ferry: City tackles traffic fixes
When Santa Clarita first became a city more than 20 years ago, one of its biggest challenges was improving traffic conditions in a city with heavy growth. The city faced this issue with resolve, embracing technology solutions while aggressively pursuing other innovative traffic improvements.

Michele E. Buttelman: The best Elks roast, ever
The best Elks roast, ever I'm enjoying the wet, cool weather. However, I'd be happier if my window wipers worked a bit better on my vehicle! A wonderful Elks Roast I think the recent Elks Roast that feted Jay Thomas was among the best I've ever attended. If you missed it, you missed a really fun evening. The roasters were actually funny, not so "blue" as in years past and the food was great. Jay ...

Marsha McLean: Community dollars in action
It’s no secret that Santa Clarita residents enjoy a high quality of life. The city’s Capital Improvement Program consists of a wide variety of projects. Capital-improvement projects include everything from the construction of curbs, gutters, sidewalks and public access ramps, to major city facilities like the city’s sports complex and ...

Did you see the big, beautiful moon on Friday night. I’m told that it was the biggest and brightest moon of the year — the wolf moon! I see the weather folks are calling for rain next week, too.

Michael Picarella: Kid bits from the ‘burbs
Party time Some people are Republicans. Some people are Democrats. Some people decline to state. My 6-year-old son said he’s a party man. “Hooray!” he says. “Party time!” Hits the spot every time “Living Spaces ... Yessss! Best Buy ... Yessss! Walmart — Save more, live better ... YES, YES, YESSSS!” My son loves when TV shows are interrupted so he can guess the commercials. Santa’s “rain” deer My boy told me that the ...
