Delio enjoys stellar debut
At this point, Saugus High graduate and Cal State Northridge golfer Nick Delio has to acknowledge that his future is bright. Premature to discuss it now or not, Delio could make a career out of the sport if he stays on pace. The 2007 Foothill League Most Valuable Player and All-Santa Clarita Valley boys golfer of the year was recently named the Big West Conference's Freshman of the Year. The 18-year-old was also selected to the All-Big West First Team. "I set my goals pretty high," he said. "My expectations were pretty high. The courses we played were not that ...

Cougars get call, Howell doesn't
There were three National Football League prospects with local ties going into this past weekend's NFL Draft. Arizona State and former College of the Canyons cornerback Justin Tryon was selected in the fourth round by the Washington Redskins. Oregon State and former COC linebacker Joey LaRocque was taken by the Chicago Bears in the seventh round. But Hart High graduate and University of Washington linebacker Dan Howell did not get selected in the draft nor has he been approached yet about signing a free agent deal with any team. "A little bit," Howell said on if he's disappointed. "It's a ...

COC's back on top
The College of the Canyons baseball team clinched the Western State Conference title with its win over Los Angeles Mission College on Saturday. The Cougars defeated the Eagles 21-3 on their home field. COC has won 23 of its last 24 games. This marks the first time since 2004 that the Cougars have clinched a conference title. "We have really been staying focused," said Cougars head coach Chris Cota. " The team has been doing everything well including hitting, pitching, and defense." COC's Caleb Deville pitched five innings, struck out one and allowed the Eagles only three hits. Deville improves ...

Back from the brink...
Back from the brink...
The way College of the Canyons softball player Sarah Hasenfus sees it, everyone should hear her story. She doesn't want what she went through to happen to anyone else. Hasenfus was in the dugout with her team up to bat in a game on Feb. 14, 2006. She was reaching to grab some water, momentarily taking her eyes off what was happening at the plate. A teammate hit a screaming foul ball into the dugout and Hasenfus didn't have time to react. The ball hit the right side of her head and she fell to the ground. "Sarah fell and ...

Ace on the ice
Ace on the ice
Saugus High graduate Alyssa Wohlfeiler said her first season on the Northeastern women's hockey team was a little disappointing, because she didn't meet her own expectations in terms of helping her team. But talk to teammate Autumn Prouty, and you'll hear that the freshman Wohlfeiler has already established herself as one of the leaders on the team and one of the most talented players the Huskies have on the ice. Prouty, a Temecula native, has played with Wohlfeiler for five years, including four with the California Selects, a team based out of Huntington Beach. So Prouty already knew what Wohlfeiler ...

Canyons goes deep
Canyons goes deep
It almost seems automatic at this point. With the College of the Canyons baseball team's 10-6 win over visiting Los Angeles Valley College on Thursday, the Cougars have run off 18 wins in their last 20 games. "We're throwing nine pretty tough outs at the plate right now," said COC head coach Chris Cota. "It's been a culmination of all nine guys taking good at bats over and over again." But the win that put COC at 17-2 in the Western State Conference didn't come so easily at first. In the first three innings, Monarchs starting pitcher Martin Sarabia cruised, ...

Errors bring down Masters College in 10th
Errors bring down Masters College in 10th
Thanks to several key errors in the top of the 10th inning, visiting Westmont College defeated The Masters College, 8-6, at Reese Field on Thursday. TMC defeated the Warriors 17-9 on Wednesday. Ranulfo Grijalva recorded three strikeouts, walked two and allowed nine hits in eight innings. Westmont kicked off its offense in the first with Hart High grad Taylor Maddox hitting  a triple to left and scoring the game's first run on a Derek Fugitt sacrifice fly. Maddox would go 3-6 on the game. But in the bottom of the second, with the Mustangs down 1-0, TMC turned the game ...

TMC sweeps by the Hawks
The Masters College baseball team squeaked out a 4-3 win over San Diego Christian College on Saturday in the second half of a doubleheader at Reese Field. They swept the Hawks with a 10-3 win in the first half of the doubleheader, but the second win proved to be much more difficult. The Mustangs got off to a bit of a slow start in the second game allowing the Hawks to score two runs in the third inning, falling behind 2-0. San Diego Christian's Sean West scored the first run for the Hawks off a Kenoli Fonseca single followed by ...

Cougars stay ahead at the top
With its 9-6 win over Glendale College at home on Saturday, the College of the Canyons baseball team stands alone in first place. The Cougars stay a game ahead of Bakersfield College, which lost on Saturday. COC defeated Glendale by launching three home runs - a single-game season-high - and also making the Vaqueros pay for their mistakes. After a potential double-play ball went off the glove of the Vaqueros shortstop and turned into an error, the Cougars took full advantage and scored three runs in the second inning. Dean Benavidez was hit by a pitch from starter Chris Turner, ...

Enjoying a Master-ful turnaround
If Friday's 30-0 victory over La Sierra University was any indication, The Master's College baseball program has made a 180 degree turn from last season, a campaign that ended far below the .500 mark. "There have been several big differences this year," said head coach Monte Brooks, in his 11th year at TMC. "First, we went out and got two full-time coaches, Chris Bando and Zane Jenson. They have added tremendously to this program." Bando, the younger brother of Sal Bando (who played third base for the 1972-74 World Champion Oakland Athletics), played in the Major Leagues from 1981-91, mostly ...

Mustangs run wild, hang 30-spot on scoreboard
The casual observer can often tell a lot about a baseball game by the way teams warm-up beforehand. For instance, on Friday, The Master's College Mustangs pregame practice was sharp, crisp and almost professional. Their La Sierra University opponents, on the other hand, wasn't. These efforts were more than reflected during the actual contest, when the Mustangs (21-7, 9-7 in the GSAC) banged out a school-record 28 hits and 30 runs to pummel the independent league foes 30-0. All of this was accomplished in just seven innings, thanks to a 15-run mercy rule. "I've never been on any team that ...

Hallman, Olsson return to TMC
Former Saugus basketball head coaches Jeff Hallman and Eric Olsson were linked in the past for so many reasons. They will be in the future as well. The best friends and former The Master's College basketball teammates who both resigned from Saugus earlier this month - Hallman the boys team and Olsson the girls - have been hired by TMC men's head coach Chuck Martin as assistants. "It's a no-brainer," Martin said of the hires. "When I found out both weren't coming back (to Saugus) and approached them, I thought if I could pull this off, it would be a ...

This is the Bulldogs second win this season over the Lady Mustangs ending TMC's season at 21-12. Both teams met back on Nov. 16 with the Bulldogs defeating the Lady Mustangs 110-99. COC softball averts disaster
When the season was starting, College of the Canyons first-year head coach John Wissmath didn't know what to expect. He didn't know much about the teams his team would be facing pre-Western State Conference play. Wissmath had just 13 players and none of those had significant pitching experience. Combined with facing some of the top junior college softball programs in Southern California, the Cougars got off to a 2-7 start and a few of those were by mercy rule. But when WSC play started on Valentine's Day, COC turned the corner. "At first I thought it would demoralize them," Wissmath ...
