Fifty-somethings win bodybuilding titles
Local residents Bobby Yamasaki and Jesse Montemayor competed in two separate bodybuilding competitions recently, both taking first place in the Masters 50 and older division and third in the open competition. Yamasaki competed in the Max Muscle Natural Bodybuilding Championship March 29. The competition was one of two that Yamasaki has taken part in, both ending in first place finishes in the Masters 50 and over division. The open competition allowed every adult age group to compete and consisted of 12 competitors, mostly in their 20s. "I wanted to see how I matched up with people half my age," Yamasaki ...

Angels bombed by Laird
ANAHEIM - The perception of the Texas Rangers going into 2008 is that, among other weaknesses, they don't have much hitting. Yet it was, of all hitters, the Rangers' No. 8 batter who did in the Los Angeles Angels and Valencia-born starter Jon Garland Sunday at Angel Stadium. Gerald Laird went 4-for-5 with two home runs and six RBIs in the Angels' 10-4 loss. The 28-year-old catcher who is supposed to be keeping a spot warm for prospect Jarrod Saltalamacchia - acquired last season from the Atlanta Braves in the deal for slugger Mark Teixeira - topped off the Rangers' ...

Torre changes the culture
LOS ANGELES - With 25 reporters surrounding him in the Los Angeles Dodgers' dugout Monday morning, manager Joe Torre proved to be the main attraction at Dodger Stadium on Opening Day. Torre, still looking unfamiliar wearing a blue jacket with Dodgers in cursive shielding the chest, still keeps his ties to the New York Yankees. He called his replacement with the Yankees Joe Girardi the night before and wished him good luck. He exchanged text messages with some of his former players. Torre even well-wished Yankee legend Yogi Berra and received a note on his desk from Yankee superfan Billy ...

Out of the pack, into the lead
Out of the pack, into the lead
Having been off the Valencia Country Club course for some 20 minutes, Brad Bryant hung around the media room for a quick minute, looked at the AT&T Champions Classic leaderboard on a gray Saturday afternoon and broke into a smile. "Me, Jay (Haas) and Bernard (Langer) tomorrow? That'll be fun to watch. I'd like to watch that on TV," Bryant said. Bryant instead will view it on the course. Trailing by four strokes coming into the second round, the 53-year-old is now alone atop the leaderboard at 7-under for the tournament after a putting clinic that gave him a 5-under ...

A unique day for Bryants
Just talking about his 45-year-old brother Bart, Uncle Bart as he called him, made the whites of Brad Bryant's eyes turn pink. As his emotions nearly reached the point of tears, the 53-year-old was able to hold back. He should have been celebrating his own stellar round two of the AT&T Champions Classic at Valencia Country Club, after shooting 5-under to move into sole possession of the tournament at 7-under. Instead, he appeared happier that brother Bart was in a tie for first place with five other golfers, including Tiger Woods and Vijay Singh, at the PGA TOUR's Arnold Palmer ...

The temptation for Jay Haas
There's always that question for certain golfers on the Champions Tour of whether or not they can pull double-duty and also compete on the PGA Tour. Jay Haas, the most decorated golfer on the Champions Tour for the last three years, answers that question with humility. The 54-year old is in second place at 5-under after two rounds of the AT&T Champions Classic at Valencia Country Club. Haas is currently fourth on the Champions Tour money list. He won the 2007 Champions Tour Player of the Year, the Charles Schwab Cup as the tour's points leader in 2006 and Rookie ...

You get the same story from a lot of golfers who competed in last year's AT&T Champions Classic. Either they were on the road, in the hotel packing or for one, laid out and recovering from back issues. They missed a great show. Tom Purtzer remembers it. The first memory now starts when he pulls up to the Valencia Country Club parking lot. In the spot nearest to the clubhouse, reserved for him, a sign displays his name and 2003 * 2007 champion. The next memory comes when he reaches the locker room. A black and gold plaque rests on ...

A crop will contend for the title
A crop will contend for the title
Things haven't changed much over the years at Valencia Country Club for the Champions Tour's AT&T Champions Classic. Maybe pin placement from year to year. But the influx over the past couple of years of highly-accomplished golfers from the PGA TOUR makes this year's tournament, which tees-off today at 10:20 a.m., likely the most competitive ever. Coming off the most exciting finish ever, as Tom Purtzer outlasted Loren Roberts in the 2007 Classic in a sudden-death playoff that went to four holes, it's now anybody's tournament. "There's a bunch of new guys out there that are hungry. We're all hungry," ...

A different perspective
At his peak, few could beat him. He was the best golfer in the world. But Nick Price has been beaten down lately. Now in his second year on the Champions Tour, the South African-native who once dominated the PGA TOUR says he's no longer dominant. "I've played so poorly that if I say I want to try and win every event, that would be a pipe dream," says Price, who is competing in his first AT&T Champions Classic at Valencia Country Club. "I'm trying to find some form. Maybe I'll be back in that competitive spirit because I haven't ...
