Young authors publish poems
Fernando Marroquin's poem, "I am From ..." tells about his home country of Guatemala, his family, and his friend Arturo, who loved basketball like Romeo loved Juliet and was murdered by gang members about a year ago on a basketball court, right in front of Fernando. About seven months ago Fernando moved to the United states from the "red zone" in Guatemala City, the most dangerous part of Guatemala, and never dreamed he'd be a published author in his new country - or in his new language. He and other young authors at Hart High School celebrated the publication of their ...

West Ranch Idol gives back, too
Forget American Idol - West Ranch High School has enough talent to host its own musical competition and raise money for a good cause at the same time. Wildcat Idol took place Thursday in the school gymnasium with proceeds benefiting the Yes I Can program, which is a class that pairs students with Asperger's Syndrome with their general education peers. Before the show started, guests waited anxiously while being served food from El Cholo and Barn Burner barbecues, donated by Blair Salisbury. In between outstanding performances from each singer, silent auctions were held featuring autographed sports memorabilia and American Idol ...

Deaf Day silences Valencia students
Deaf Day silences Valencia students
Deaf Day was an incredibly interesting experience for American Sign Language students at Valencia High School when, for one day, they all pretended to be hearing impaired. Students wore signs that said "deaf" on them, wore earplugs, and didn't talk for one whole day except in sign language. Deaf Day officially started the moment students woke up in the morning on March 20. Valencia sign language teacher Phyllis Madden suggested that the students live this day just as if we were truly deaf -- starting with waking up. Students had learned that the deaf don't use conventional alarm clocks, so ...

Since most Good Friday observances begin at midday, the district hopes that most students will be able to attend at least morning classes so that they miss a minimum of class time.
