Letters to the Editor Section

It’s all about context
Regarding Gary Horton's latest column ("If not in intent, it's racist in deed," March 10), I would like to share a story with Horton.

Bravo on new layout
I love your new Signal, the layout is totally friendly and I especially like the entertainment addition. Bravo guys.

Whitman a Republican?
Regarding "Whitman cuts ties with Kellar" (The Signal, Jan. 31).

‘Meeting of the minds’
Two unlikely power lawyers have become an unlikely couple. Ted Olson and David Boies have united to be advocates in fighting Proposition 8 in California.

Disagree with Shaw
Regarding Diana Shaw's column "So much for judicial restraint" (Feb. 7), I disagree on several bases.

‘Junk the junk food’
First Lady Michelle Obama's campaign to fight childhood obesity has been a long time coming.

Goodbye to a hero
Saturday afternoon (March 13), a community came to together to say goodbye to a fallen soldier.

Misleading article
Regarding "Shouting match erupts before City Council meeting" (The Signal, Feb. 9): This morning, as protests in Iran heat up, it was revealed the Iranian police shot the protesters with paintballs. Why? So that they can easily be identified when the crowds break up and then "dealt with." I feel that The Signal did the same thing to me when I, as an informed citizen, voiced my visceral reaction to the "members of the Full ...

Thank you, Santa Clarita
On March 13, with heavy heart I had the privilege and honor of attending the funeral of my stepchildren's longtime friend and local hero, Sgt. Ian Gelig.

Why I support Boydston
I read last Sunday's editorial ("All things considered, we recommend...," March 14) with amazement. It's not that The Signal editorial board recommended no changes for all three seats on the City Council, it's that the editorial board doesn't seem to understand how our City Hall actually works.

Brain food for business people
I  have enjoyed Ken Keller’s writings for years and would like to respond to his March 3 column, “Advice for a small-business owner.”

McCaskill’s perspective is invalid
Linda McCaskill’s letter “New Perspective” (March 8) describes a scenario in which your child is drowning and asks if you would rather have an illegal immigrant who can swim or an American who cannot.

No hidden money tree
Regarding Gary Horton’s column “Blind to our own blindness” (Feb. 3), there are several problems with your metaphor here.

Another perspective for McCaskill
Here’s another “perspective” to Linda McCaskill’s “New perspective” (The Signal, March 8):

No apologies from Kellar
Regarding “McKeon: Kellar should offer an apology” (The Signal, Feb. 3): Mr. McKeon: as a loyal and faithful constituent of yours for these many years, I thought that you truly were in touch with your “grass roots.”   I always thought that you were one of the few elected officials to Washington who never could be accused of being a “politician.” There has been a paradigm change in the past year, a huge upheaval of ...

Why shut down Soundsations?
Regarding "Sounding off: Owner of car-stereo shop in Newhall says he is being forced out" (The Signal, March 12):

Proud to be American
I would like to thank the fine people of the Santa Clarita area. I am a member of the Patriot Guard Riders. We were invited to participate in the services for Sgt. Ian Gelig last Saturday. The unbelievable support this community showed to the Gelig family by your lining of the streets while he was transported to his final resting place was a thing to be seen. Flags, signs, salutes, boys, girls, moms, dads - ...

Oh, the irony
That lying quitter former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin, who has gone to great lengths to hype the supposed dangers of a big government takeover of American health care, admitted over the weekend that she used to get her treatment in Canada's single-payer system.

What about English?
How sad it is that for your recent Reader Meter poll question, "What's the most important language for high school students to learn?" you did not list the most important language - English.

Whitman a Republican?
Regarding “Whitman cuts ties with Kellar” (The Signal, Jan. 31).   Whitman’s spokeman e-mailed: “Bob Kellar’s remarks stoke the worst type of political dialogue. Meg Whitman is running for governor to help bring Californians together for a common purpose.” One wonders what that purpose is? Possibly to grant amnesty to illegal immigrants? Or just give them the state’s treasury? Meg Whitman claims to be a “conservative” Republican. She contributed the maximum $4,000 to Barbara Boxer’s ...

Are you embarrassed?
Which Santa Clarita City Council member is an embarrassment to the city? I have been following the many articles regarding Bob Kellar’s statement that he is a “proud racist.” I know Kellar and he is not a racist. He used that divisive statement as irony.

Think before you speak
Bob Kellar and now Buckaroo McKeon suffer from a disorder that affects most all politicians. They use their vocal chords before engaging their brains. They should confine their oratory to researched and well-written papers. I’d suggest that literary genius who authored Sarah Palin’s oratory at the Republican convention.   That speech convinced many that she was a knowledgeable and worthy vice presidential candidate and qualified to succeed the president if needed.   We know better ...

Shouldn’t they be at military tribunals?
James Q. Wilson’s article in the Wall Street Journal on Jan. 22 reported that estimates of the cost of civilian trials of Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and the other four terrorists will cost New York City hundreds of millions of dollars for just the first trial. Appeals are almost automatic.

Imagine that
Mark Potok ("Talk of ‘revolution' can be dangerous," March 9) seems to address the idea that a large section of the voting public are at odds with the current administration.

Hart failure
In failing to approve the charter for the Albert Einstein Academy, the William S. Hart Union High School District board has done an incredible disservice to the children of the Santa Clarita Valley.

Why not one district?
In response to the article titled "Teacher layoffs loom" printed in the March 4 issue: would now be a good time to consider creating one elementary school district?

Smathers was wrong
The premise of Frank Smathers' entire letter of Jan. 30 ("Box score: fascism 5, democracy 4," The Signal) is false.

Obamacare is atrocious
You won't hear it from the true believers who write in on these pages, but Obamacare would be a disaster - and here's why.

Delighted with editorial
Regarding "Our View: An innovative school plan that deserves support" (The Signal, Feb. 7):

Helping the homeless veterans
The city of Santa Clarita should open a food pantry for the homeless veterans, instead of having them begging on the streets.
