How safe are the streets of Valencia? I read with concerned interest the article by Signal staff writer Stephen K. Peeples entitled "Timing is everything for traffic control" (Nov. 23, 2007). What particularly focused my interest was the allusion that traffic cameras were having some consequence on changing people's driving behavior. The gauge referenced in the article was the decrease in the number of citations issued by the Sheriff's Department. The real story of peoples' driving behavior is not traffic control. It is the lack of emphasis given to reckless driving in Valencia and the acceptance of this that causes this custom to now come before the ... |

Stop illegals now To The Editor: Here were are, with a torrent of illegals invading the United States border at a rate of at least 12,000-plus per day. The Bush administration has been dragging its feet on the way about this issue (no big surprise). Illegal immigration is the No. 1 issue of the next election, whether you want to believe it or not. If we do not do something - anything - and quick, we will no longer be the United States of America, but the United States of Mexico. If there were laws in California to send the illegals back to ... |

This one's for you, Dad To The Editor: A month ago I lost my dad, Edward Garfalo. He was a frequent contributor to these opinion pages. He was a man of little words, so his letters were short and to the point: "One-liners," as he liked to call them. He was proud to tell people that he was a published writer, but I think he just liked seeing his name in print. I am not a writer; in fact, I hate to write. I'm just a daughter who loves and misses her dad and wants to honor him in some small way. This is for ... |

A travesty against a vet To The Editor: Thank you for the article on Carl Diekman. It's truly a shame that the Department of Veterans Affairs has so little respect for this man and is coming after him over $84.00 a month. The fact that they will not even take the time to explain the charges and offer to work with him is a travesty. The VA has had so much negative publicity over the years, and here they have a chance to right a wrong to a man who has served our country. Let's hope they do the right thing. |

Strickland was right To The Editor: Paul Strickland's commentary ("1,000 pound gorilla is immigration," April 11, 2008) is dead-on correct. As the Bush administration drags its feet in building the congressionally approved border fence, the torrent of illegals invading the United States flows like an uncontrolled high jet water hose, and the 1,000-pound gorilla pushes tax-paying citizens to the Earth like the gravity of Jupiter. Paul Strickland is right. Illegal immigration is the No. 1 issue on Americans' minds for the 2008 election. It trumps everything because illegal immigration affects everyone of us. Los Angeles County spends $1 billion per year on illegals ... |

Don’t scapegoat liberals To The Editor: Just a reminder for my conservative brethren that without patriotic American liberals there wouldn't have been freedom of the press, freedom of religion, the right to bear arms, the right to a fair trial by jury facing one's accuser, an end to cruel and unusual punishment, the end of slavery, the women's right to vote, the end of child sweat-shop labor, the 40-hour work week, and come to think of it, a United States of America. So the next time you have a cup of coffee, remember some of your liberal founding forefathers who threw a Tea ... |

Find new sources of school funds To The Editor: I graduated from Canyon High School two years ago and am currently attending the University of California at Santa Cruz. I am writing in response to Paul Strickland's commentary of last week ("Some Legislative Relief for Schools," April 21, 2008). The tone of the article seemed to paint Santa Clarita as a small, quaint town that is being bullied by the state and not receiving appropriate funds for schools. Schools in Santa Clarita are well above average, but the problem when I attended Canyon never seemed to be funding; Santa Clarita is an affluent community and a ... |

More study needed on drug testing To The Editor: On March 27, The Signal reported that Hart School District officials, after facing considerable opposition from parents and faculty, are still in limbo concerning the implementation of random student drug testing (a practice that is becoming more common in America) in an attempt to deter drug use. One day earlier, the Australian National Council on Drugs denounced testing, finding it to do more harm than good. The philosophy underlying testing is this: Students know they could be tested at any time, so will stay clean in order to avoid punishment. Random testing, however, is not so random ... |

Thanks for protecting our wilderness areas To The Editor: As we become increasingly aware of our interdependence with the natural world, I would like to express my gratitude to all those who work to preserve our environment for our descendants. Specifically, thanks to Congressman Buck McKeon and Sen. Barbara Boxer for their bipartisan effort to re-introduce legislation that would preserve the Hoover Wilderness Additions in the Eastern Sierra and the Amargosa River in the Mojave Desert. Much of the wilderness that we enjoy today is the direct result of the bipartisan legislation of the '60s and '70s. I welcome the return of this amicable political climate, ... |

Vote Obama, forget McCain In what alternative universe does Stephen Winkler reside ("Think before you vote," Letters, April 24)? Hillary Clinton is the Democratic party candidate and John McCain is a liberal Republican? Not on this planet! It is highly unlikely that Hillary will receive the nomination as it is mathematically impossible. The race is over! The sooner the Democratic nominee starts to bring out all of John McCain's drawbacks, the better. Sen. McCain was one of the Keating Five in the savings and loan scandal. He has voted against equal pay for women. He has voted against a new G.I. Bill for our ... |

Darn that Signal After 24 years, I am amazed, sad and disgusted about the changes that have been going on with The Signal over the last several months. Where is The Signal, our local paper? Instead of a paper whose articles should be about what's happening in the SCV, I get a mess of here, there and everywhere. I will be changing papers when my subscription expires. John Boston (Mr. SCV) is gone. By his disappearance, we no longer enjoy his witty and informative information about the SCV. What a huge mistake, which I'm sure was his. Mr. Boston was involved with so ... |

Think before you vote To The Editor: America is fortunate that both the Democratic and Republican candidates are extremely qualified for the presidency. Both Hillary Clinton and John McCain have the experience and love of country to guide the ship of state through stormy waters. No need to worry about another Bay of Pigs under their watch. I will vote for Clinton because I share her views on national health care, the pursuit of alternative sources of energy, her support of public education, and ending the war in Iraq. However, a vote for McCain is another vote for America. He is a war hero ... |

Recycling obstacles To The Editor: I am writing to express my disappointment in the recycling system that is in effect this year. We have always been able to take wine bottles and glass containers to the recycle center, and we were paid a small amount for them. Now that the center by Saugus Café is no longer there, we take things to the center at Albertson's on Bouquet. However, the manager of the store told us that the center does not accept wine bottles and glass containers anymore. So in order to recycle these items for reimbursement we have to drive to ... |

'Do as I say, not as I do' Recently two local Republicans announced they would be writing commentaries for The Signal in addition to Monday's "Right Her Right Now." These two men, Steve Lunetta and Paul Strickland, have different styles but both write excellent commentaries. The news of their more frequent submissions is gratifying on a couple of fronts. One, The Signal is pretty much dominated by the left six days out of seven (nationally and locally) and two, Messrs. Lunetta and Strickland set forth clear, supported information. Alas, the announcement was not good news for all. In short order, a liberal commentary attacked the disclosure. "How dare ... |

Who are the real losers? To The Editor: It is fair to say that I was extremely disappointed in the results of the recent local election to fill two empty seats on the Santa Clarita City Council. The residents of this valley had the opportunity to vote for a woman who has consistently shown her integrity, enthusiasm, and dedication in her position as one of the city's planning commissioners - Diane Trautman. She didn't win, but we are the losers. |

Hart is trying hard To The Editor: I couldn't agree more with Dave McEachern (April 15). We can do more for our gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender students. Indeed, we should have no tolerance for bullying and name-calling. I would like to share the fact that we are doing exactly what he suggests with our new teachers. I serve as induction director for the Hart high school district's new teachers. For more than five years we have offered a heart-warming and heart-rending workshop entitled "Understanding the Hart Student." We require every new teacher and counselor in our district to attend. Peggy Stabile, former president ... |

Lunetta's case is weak To The Editor: It's truly sad that columnists like Mr. Lunetta perpetuate false arguments on subjects as important as national security. While his history lesson was educational, his statement "the Democrats' cowardly delay of the FISA bill denies our nation vital intelligence to fight terrorists" is patently false. Congress did pass a FISA update bill. Bush vetoed it. The original law, as well as the update, allows for full surveillance. The government only needs to go to the FISA court and get the "spying" approved. The court has approved nearly all requests for permission. The law even allows for the ... |

A sense of propriety, or maybe not To The Editor: I was initially not amused by Pat Bagley's cartoon this morning (April 9, 2008) representing Charlton Heston as a gun-waving nut outside the gates of heaven. However, after ruminating on this for a bit I thought, well, actually, his NRA participation was presented by the media as defining the man in his later life. What really made me laugh, though, was the thought of seeing a similar send-off for Cecile Richards or Elena Maslia Marks upon their demise. As the national leaders for Planned Parenthood, perhaps Pat would be kind enough to draw them standing at the ... |

Vote-by-mail ballots sent too early To The Editor: I use vote-by-mail. I got the information from my mailbox, read it all carefully and mailed the ballot back within a few days. So what is the problem? I missed the campaign by mailing it in so soon! For voters like me, the ballots are sent out way too early. I know that there might be a few of us who need that time because of extraordinary circumstances, but I, like many, find it a hassle to go to the polls. One time I went to the address on the sample ballot and the polling place wasn't ... |

Time to take down campaign signs To The Editor: Now that the City Council election is over, I sure hope that all those who ran will remove all of the signs they have placed on almost every street corner. We are somewhat new to the community, and I was appalled at the city's own residents trashing the beauty of their community with ugly election signs. In my opinion, if these people really cared about our community, they would not have allowed the placement of these signs in the first instance. |

Vehicle tax is necessary To The Editor: You can definitely put me on the side of the room that is against more unnecessary taxes - the key word being "unnecessary." Taxation is part of the price we all pay to live in this country. "Freedom is not free" couldn't be more true than about taxes. As they say, "can't live with them, can't live without them." Some are absolutely needed, while others are not. Assemblyman Cameron Smyth touches on taxes on both sides. While he doesn't get too specific, I assume that the "Plastic Bag Tax" is being considered as a environmental deterrent. While ... |

Is Obama the pied piper? To The Editor: I have been sitting on the sidelines looking and listening to all sides, and it came to me - Barack Hussein Obama Jr. is the Pied Piper! He came out of nowhere last year and announced his intentions to run for president. He had very little name recognition and jumped the gun and forced others to get into the race prematurely. Just think of all the money spent that could go to better use. Now we are down to three persons; we know John McCain and certainly know Hillary Rodham Clinton, but Barack Hussein Obama Jr. - ... |
