Grace Baptist's new pastor hopes to make youngsters 'world conscious'
Just two months into his new position as pastor of student life at Grace Baptist Church, R.J. Holt already has big plans for the Saugus church's youth ministry and its junior high and high school students. "Grace would be a place to show God's love to the community and people outside the church," Holt said. He also wants to show that the church and its services can be a "place for kids to feel safe" and that "God can make a huge difference in their lives." Perhaps most importantly, Holt wants to make others "world conscious" by taking students on ...

Spiritual journey begins in Asia
Three years ago, Jonathan Kraut returned from Sri Lanka, where he spent a month helping to rebuild the country after the 2004 tsunami destroyed the area. Sent as a director for tsunami operation recovery, Kraut worked with local residents to build a community center, pre-school and elementary school. After coming back home to the United States, Kraut found himself curious about the people he had met. Although he had experience with Asian culture and beliefs from his Army days, he wanted to find out more. "I was completely fascinated by this perspective," he said. He soon began attending meditation classes ...

Local woman aims to change image of pagans
Local woman aims to change image of pagans
The word "pagan" has some unsavory associations, ranging from devil worshiper to baby burner. Nancy White wants to change that. "I want to put a new face on the image of paganism," she said. As member of the Santa Clarita Valley Pagan Network and representative on the Santa Clarita Valley Interfaith Council, White said paganism is an "earth-based" form of religion centered around the cycles of the planet. "We follow the seasons of the year," White said, and added that they follow the solar and lunar calendar. Although paganism includes druids and wiccans, White considers herself to be a solitary ...

Creating faith through Fun Life
Four years ago, John and Nancy Pantellas realized the Santa Clarita Valley was home to a population of youngsters with disabilities who didn't have a place to learn about the Christian faith. Nor did these kids have a way to meet others and have fun during their teen years. That realization led to the formation of Santa Clarita's chapter of Fun Life, which is part of Young Life, an international nondenominational Christian ministry that reaches out to adolescents. Young Life has been part of the Santa Clarita Valley since 1982. The first Fun Life meeting was held in a home ...

Saugus woman chronicles her search for God
Saugus woman chronicles her search for God
Every time Jolanda Tedford found herself in an emotional situation, she would quickly type up a series of poems and phrases to convey her thoughts. She did this for 16 years, keeping track of all of them. Now the Saugus resident has compiled a collection of her poems in the book "My Eternal Search: A Journey into the Tabernacle of God." The series of poems follows Tedford's own personal journey through poetry while shedding light on the larger picture of understanding God. "I found him when I found myself," Tedford said. The book is made up of three sections: "My ...

Christians celebrate their holiest week
Christians celebrate their holiest week
Whether it's waking up extra early on Sunday to join a local church during a sunrise service, watching a play about the life Jesus Christ or listening to a choir illustrate the story of Easter through song, multitudes of local individuals and families will gather on Easter Sunday to worship together. The holiday celebrates the Christian belief that Christ was resurrected after dying on the cross. And for many Christian church leaders, this most significant of holy days is associated with themes of renewal and reflection. "Easter is something that has multiple facets to it," said Daniel Luther, a member ...
