SCV’s 2008 Man and Woman of the Year
More than 375 members of the SCV community gathered last Friday night at the Hyatt Valencia to recognize the contributions of 23 of our valley's most dedicated and selfless volunteers - and bestow the prestigious Man of the Year and Woman of the Year awards on two of them. While the tone of the evening was upscale suit-and-tie, this was really a roll-your-sleeves-up and pitch-in crowd. And in the press and din of the packed lobby, as guests and nominees waited shoulder-to-shoulder and hip-to-hip for the doors to open to the Grand Ballroom, the mood was jovial, expectant and, well, ...

Shining stars of the SCV
Shining stars of the SCV
You'd expect a nice service club brunch at the Valencia Country Club to be a charming, sedate affair where the speakers might not even need a microphone to be heard above the occasional clink of fork-on-plate. Well, not so with the Zonta Club of Santa Clarita Valley's Women in Service brunch on Saturday. These ladies can make some noise. Whenever guest speaker Michelle Armstrong asked the audience members to turn to their neighbor and comment - well, you couldn't have heard a 747 landing in the lobby. But it only makes sense. Zontians have the energy, will and means to ...

Modern-day debutantes
Best friends since the fourth grade, Nicole Bergantino and Kimberly Hedman finish each other's sentences and laugh in tandem when they notice they're wearing the same sandals (Bergantino's toenails are black, while Hedman's sport a spunky red). Like most teens, the Hart High seniors love Starbucks, the mall and music. Bergantino, 19, works as a nanny three times a week. After giving up volleyball and her allowance last year, she uses her paycheck to help pay for her car and gas, as well as saving for a spring break trip. Hedman, 18, who's been ferociously studying math and preparing college ...

Roses in the rain
Mother's Day came early to 14 Santa Clarita Valley women, as they were given special tributes by their daughters at the 22nd annual Henry Mayo Guild Silver Rose Guide Debutantes Tea at the Newhall home of Sondra Paskach on Feb. 24. There were drops of rain falling from the sky and, under the white tent, teardrops - which started almost immediately as the first debutante, Charlotte Boon of Los Angeles Lutheran High School, presented her mother with a collage and read a poem that recounted their time together from birth through high school. Music played a theme in two presentations. ...
