Greenhouse Cafe

Greenhouse Cafe
Greenhouse Café owner Andy Urban admits the restaurant's name might be misleading for some people. "Because it's ‘greenhouse' they expect almost a vegetarian-type place, but it's not," he said. "It's good, all-around American food." And then he quipped, "There are plenty of calories in our dishes." He added, "All our food is made fresh to order and our dressings are fresh-made here every day." While you can go low-cal or no-meat at Greenhouse Café (there ...

Two Women on Wine: Hot dogs, burgers and good wine
By now you should know that we're fairly traditional. So it should come as no surprise that at our Fourth of July cookout you would find hot dogs and burgers grilled to order, heaps of creamy potato salad and cole slaw, plenty of smoky baked beans with bacon, not to mention sauerkraut and corn-on-the-cob slathered in butter.

Who makes holidays?

Who makes holidays?
My calendar says that Sunday, June 28 is Paul Bunyan Day. Seriously. You know, legendary oversize lumberjack, gigantic blue ox, cleared entire states of trees, dug the Great Lakes, yadda, yadda. Big guy, big deeds, got a holiday. But my calendar doesn't specify where it's Paul Bunyan Day. For sure it is in South Lyon, Mich. I know for a fact the Lyon Township Public Library is celebrating the day. Of course, the library is ...

Family-friendly BBQ

Family-friendly BBQ
It's a location with a long history of great barbecue. The corner of White's Canyon and Soledad Canyon Roads (Canyon Center) in Canyon Country previously housed a Santa Clarita Valley institution, Rattler's, for more than 20 years. Now, that venerated location is home to T-Bo's House of BBQ.

Courthouse Square is back

Courthouse Square is back
Tracked by an arsenal of video and still cameras, serenaded by the USC Marching Band playing "Seventy-six Trombones" and swatted by a bottle of champagne, the first Universal Studios Hollywood tour-tram to visit famed Courthouse Square in a year made its appearance on Thursday, June 18. And those aboard it probably became the most photographed studio visitors in decades.

Mat Hoffman’s Xtreme Sports Team will perform at Six Flags Magic Mountain all summer

Mat Hoffman’s Xtreme Sports Team will perform at Six Flags Magic Mountain all summer
There was a whole lot of "flying" going on at Six Flags Magic Mountain last Thursday evening as Mat Hoffman's Danger Defying Daredevils Xtreme Sports Team amazed the audience at the Street Sports Action Theater - and, afterward, his Air-Borne Thrill Team tore up the sky. Skates, skateboards, BMX bikes and motorcycles were the vehicles of "wow" at the theater and helicopters, paramotors, parachutes and wing suits had the same effect in the atmosphere.

Two Women on Wine: Enjoy a festival of summer wines
Summer is right around the corner and we couldn't be happier. We've dusted off the patio furniture and are ready for candlelit patio dinners with family and friends on balmy nights. Our grill goes into overtime during the summer. We cook just about everything on the grill, from chicken or fish kabobs to steak and baby-back ribs, vegetables, hamburgers and hot dogs.

Video games: 'Ghost Busters'
Movie comedies rarely lead to funny sequels. Take "Ghostbusters," whose blockbuster success in 1984 led to "Ghostbusters II" five years later. Critics, fans and, reportedly, some of the cast, felt let down by the result.

Father’s Day, schmahther’s day
In an effort to give everyone time to shop - and because, well, I alternate weeks with my columns and won't be doing one next week - let's get a little early perspective on Father's Day. To sum up, it blows chunks. Maybe if you are lucky, as a dad, you get a new pair of safari shorts, a tie or flip flops for Father's Day. And then you get to go out and buy ...
