Safety inspector nabbed for making bomb

The 21-year-old Newhall man arrested this week for allegedly possessing an explosive device was employed as a safety inspector, a county official said today.

"He had a (carbon dioxide) container filled with primer powder," a Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department official said. "He made an IED."

IEDs, or improvised explosive devises such as a homemade bomb, are illegal in California.

The man, who lived on Arcadia Street, was arrested just before 2 a.m. Monday and was being held Wednesday in a Los Angeles County jail on $500,000 bail, according to county booking records.

He could face up to a year in a county jail for the misdemeanor charge, district attorney's office spokeswoman Jane Robison said.

I have to admit I'm not liking this piece much, there's no detail to it. For example, where was the bomb found and why was he arrested at 2 a.m.? That is an odd time to be arrested unless a search warrant is involved or you're being pulled over for suspicion of DUI after leaving a bar or night club.

Was this thing really a bomb or IED? Maybe the guy was just planning to take it on the next camping trip to the dessert and have some fun with it and the potato canon. As Bryon says a little more info would be nice.

You are not allowed to have fun in the desert and also you are not allowed to protect yourself with a firearm.

You are not allowed to protect yourself with a firearm if you are convicted felon or a minor. The rest of us are allowed to keep/bear arms. I have a loaded shotgun at the ready just in case.

bryan_herbert, "Better safe than sorry!!"
What difference what time he was arrested, and where the bomb was found,
the man was under suspension!!"

I agree with the other posters...was this guy some sort of terrorist, or just screwing around trying to make a homemade version of an M-80? How powerful would this "bomb" have been? Was he targeting it at a specific person or place, or just wanted to take it out to the desert and blow it up?
With the lack of detail in this story, it raises many more questions than it answers so why even report it?

iknowmorethanyou. In a way, you are wrong felon or not. You just indicated that you have the intent to murder. You use a gun, you will be charged by the D.A.. self defense or not. At that point you will need to pay to make yourself innocent. It happened to someone i know who had no record. Who was protecting his family!
A fire cracker or a gun powder can be an IED They are using this guy to make an example. California is turning into Germany with SS!

Wow, are you that dense? I in no way said I intend to murder anyone. And you are absolutely wrong, If an intruder enters my house illegally and I fear that he may harm me or my family then I can do WHATEVER I deem necessary to deal with that threat, INCLUDING shooting him with my shotgun. That is case law, meaning it's already an established legal precedence.

Didn't you see the news last month where those 2 doofus' broke into that lady's house and she was on the phone with the 9-1-1 operator asking if she could shoot the bad guy? She blew him out of his shoes, and she was not arrested and she is not facing any charges from the DA.

You are so wrong about self defense, I am legally authorized to use self defense, you are as well, and that includes defending yourself with the means of a firearm.

You may want to read the California Penal Code(that's a book with all of the laws written in it) to educate yourself instead of relying on a story from someone you know.

Wow. This town just gets crazier and crazier. Billet05: Are you really that ignorant to say that our state is turning into 1930s Germany? The SS? Do you even know what that means? Perhaps a little less gun-toting and bit more education might help things along. And, for the record: Any idiot who is making ANY type of IED in Santa Clarita should be arrested. Further, a firecracker (as you say) also is illegal. We DO live in brush fire country.

@LADIMAS No where in the story does it say he was suspended. News stories usually give more details like the suspects name and how the bomb was discovered, this is left out for some reason. This story also does not say how big of a CO2 container was found.

CO2 containers come in variable sizes from small for use in BB Guns to large for commercial soda machines. Depending on the size of the CO2 container and whether or not the primer powder was mixed with anything, add a fuse and a timer, place under a car next to the fuel tank and you have a car bomb. Do the same thing but place next to a gas main and you can just about level a house or small grocery store. Nobody just makes a bomb for fun, it would be nice to know if something was planned.
