The second Canyon High School graduate known to have been killed in a car crash in less than a month was due to graduate college in May, his father said Thursday.

"He was going to graduate Cal State San Marcos with a degree in criminal justice," Derek V. Millsap said of his son, former Santa Clarita Valley resident Derek Millsap, who died Tuesday in a crash on Interstate 15 in Escondido.

California Highway Patrol traffic investigators initially said Derek Millsap was racing another vehicle on the interstate. His father challenged the statement Thursday.

"It was not a racing issue," he said. "It was two cars jockying for position. We all do it," he said.

The investigation into Derek Millsap's death is still ongoing, but investigators believe the 22-year-old died after losing control of his 2011 Nissan 370Z while traveling on the southbound side of I-15 at 4:40 p.m. Tuesday, CHP officials said in a news release.

At some point after entering the I-15, Millsap's car crashed into a metal light pole on the shoulder of the road, crossed all lanes of the interstate, collided with the center divider, and came to rest in the high-occupancy-vehicle lane.

He was pronounced dead at the scene. Neither drugs nor alcohol appeared to be a factor in the crash, the release said.

Derek Millsap's autopsy was performed Wednesday. He died of multiple blunt-force injuries, San Diego County Corner's Office medical examiner Korletta Howrish said.

The Millsap family lived in the Santa Clarita Valley for about 20 years, Derek V. Millsap said, and his son kept in touch with several close friends here while he was living in Escondito.

"He was just up there a week or two ago," Derek V. Millsap said.

The younger Millsap graduated from Canyon High in 2007 and knew 19-year-old Dakota DeMott, another Canyon High graduate, who died after the Ford mustang he was riding in slammed into a tree on Sand Canyon Road earlier this month.

"Dakota DeMott was a friend of the family," Derek V. Millsap said. "He didn't attend Dakota's funeral, but he knew the story and he wasn't happy about it."

A vigil for Derek Millsap has been scheduled for 8 p.m. Friday at the Youth Grove in Central Park in Saugus.

The youth grove was constructed in 2006 and is dedicated to Santa Clarita youth who have died in traffic-related accidents, city official Tess Simgen said.

Since 1975, more than 82 SCV residents under the age of 24 have died as a result of car collisions. Eighty-two of their names are on display at the Youth Grove.

The crash that claimed the life of DeMott is still under investigation, Santa Clarita Valley Sheriff's Station Sgt. Mike Shapiro said Thursday.

The driver in that crash, Colt Doherty, 19, was no longer listed in critical condition at Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital but was still hospitalized, Shapiro said. He has been at the hospital since the Jan. 10 crash.

Another dead young person, another family in denial. This is terrible, when will it ever end?

CAMOM: Posted: January 27, 2012 5:01 a.m.

As of 4 p.m. this afternoon (1/26), after talking to several witnesses at the scene and investigating the accident scene, the crash was found to not have been Derek's fault in any way. The CHP is looking for a Black Nissan Titan. The driver will be charged with vehicular manslaughter for cutting Derek off as he was merging onto the SB 15 freeway and then fleeing the accident scene. This young man who passed away deserves for the public to know the truth. He was an outstanding man who was loved and adored by anyone who knew him.Let's pray they find the driver of that truck so we can have our final answers. God bless his family who are grieving in a way I hope none of us ever have to. Bless you Derek. Another Angel in heaven.

@CAMOM------and you obtained these "facts" from what source?

whataplace: Posted: January 27, 2012 12:05 p.m.

I don't know what happened. iknowmorethanyou doesn't either. Quit passing judgement on everything without the facts. And when you know the facts still
keep you mean spirtied comments to yourself. My heart goes out to the family at this difficult time. May God be with you all.

I feel very sad for the family of this young man. He appeared to have a bright future ahead of him in law enforcement. However, his father states that it is not his fault and that we all "jocky" for position. We do not all do that and I would consider that driving aggressively.

sreilly888: Posted: January 27, 2012 12:56 p.m.

Iknowmorethanyou - "Another family in denial" - what exactly do you mean? That this family is going through the grieving process or that they are in denial of the facts as YOU see them? Never mind I think we all know the answer to this question.

Folks,

I beg of you to let this one pass without all of the hearsay and attacks. Unlike the DeMott and Doherty accident, I did know this young man all too well and in stark contrast to the accident of a couple weeks ago, this man took out only himself.

Derek was a prized son, a young man who we would have all been grateful to have had as our child, but in a single moment, he is gone. He did not have a history of poor driving, he was a great student, and loved by every person he came into contact with. He should be remembered this way.

There will be a candlelight vigil this evening to pay our respects to the family and friends and Derek himself, Central Park Youth Grove at 8pm.

The circumstances of this crash are irrelevant at this point. The report has not been completed and all information out on the streets is pure speculation.

I beg of all of you to put down your keyboards for a day and if you really want to be a part of something special, join us this evening for what we hope will be the last vigil that we hold for any child in our community.

Mark Webb

MRW2161 - You are so right and I apologize - buttons got pushed because I do know this family. In my attempt to protect I only added fuel to the fire and that is not the message I want to be received. Again, sorry!

mrw2161: Posted: January 27, 2012 1:59 p.m.

Reilly,

Completely understandable, I have been crying for days on this one and will support him also....it is also the reason I chose to reveal my name on this one...

And I do understand the angst that KNOWMORE is expressing, it is time for this to end, regardless of the circumstances, it is my express intent to make sure that not one more young person dies this year in our valley....it ends now !!

My prayers to the family of these young men..........

C_Cmom75: Posted: January 27, 2012 3:25 p.m.

mrw2161 - I am sorry this has happened to someone close to you. As you may remember from previuos articles alot of people (including myself) asked people to stop attacking and passing judgement on Colt and Dakota because there were people who could be reading this that loved and cared for them. I agree its not a time for attacking and hersay etc.; but those boys were loved and cherished by someone too just like this young man. So just because he wasnt racing means he deserves more consideration or that his family does? I think ALL of them deserves the consideration of compassion and that their families are given time to grieve. I dont think anyone should make assumptions, judgements on either one of these cases. Its too new and believe it or not these boys' friends and family members read this and would be hurt from some peoples commments... just like you dont want that to happen to this young man.

Again, please accept my deepest condolences for your loss and for his family's loss. I cant imagine your or their pain. I will keep you all in my prayers.

mrw2161: Posted: January 27, 2012 7:22 p.m.

CC Mom....

Imagine the battle of personal hypocrisy I have been dealing with since Derek's passing. The statements I was reading were so aggravating "who cares if they were racing or speeding" ? someone asked....

I stand by most of my comments, I understand that all these children are loved but the facts gathered pointed to a history of bad driving by the young man who killed Dakota....I guess I was awash in finally getting out the cold hard truth versus sugarcoating it for the sake of the living.

I absolutely understand your comments and concern and although my comments were harsh and truthful I will issue an apology to anyone hurt by them, I cant say I wasnt trying to hurt anyone, because frankly I was trying to bring to attention the bad decisions made everyday by drivers all over this valley.

I am so broken over this one, mind, spirit and soul completely broken....
